Hi shuen,

Nice to meet you.

As far as discussion on the half point goes, some schools/instructors/lineages use dim as the half point, others use huen, maybe others use something else. Which does yours use and why?

Hi,

i am too beginner, so i did not learned the Pole set yet... but i read the article and talked about it with my sifu. He learned the set just as 8 diagram pole (of the fifth bother) without the 6.5 Point in the name (but the whole set with all of the moves) so the Question why does it called "6.5" came only recently...

When I learned the pole, I was taught 14 points and not 6.5. The 14 points I learned are exactly as written in the article by Master Yee Chi Wai and Pedro Yee Sifu. But in the defense of a half point, I was told that two of the moves are so similar that they are considered as the same move. Now if there is any truth to that, if you divide the movement of the 14 keywords by two it would give you 6.5 methods.

When I read the article on the eight diagram pole, it appears that the 6.5 points hold common purpose as the 14 keywords. Whether my observation is correct or not, I am not sure.

The form is called 5th Brother 8 Diagram Pole - "Ng Lung Ba Gua Gwun" and within it is the concept of the 6.5 points - "Luk Deem Bune Gwun". As far as I know, the 6.5 points is not part of the form's name, just a concept within the form. Other styles also have their own 6.5 points concepts in their pole form.

Hi Jerry Battle-sifu, my sifu says hi and that he apologizes for not keeping in touch. He said he will call you later in the week.

My sifu and his training brothers, as well as my sigung, urge us to always keep an open mind and not close ourselves off to other ideas. In my sigung and sibak's recent article, sigung refers to huen as the half point. He also states that the 6 1/2 points/techniques are in a sense the embodiment of our 14 keywords.
For us, we consider both dim and huen as possible half points, depending on the practitioner's need. For instance, as my uncle Yui stated, dim can be considered the half point because it easily combines with other techniques (ex. combining dim and tan to strike the opponent's lead hand). Huen can also be considered a half point because, as my sigung stated in the article, in actual usage half the circle is used, and it also combines with the other points (ex. back circle to but/clear, or forward circle to tan).

Just my two cents on a topic that I'm very excited about, yet very new to. I apologize for any mistakes, and I look forward to viewing more on this by those more experienced than I.

Just a random thought, why another system and not use the 12 bridges. Are the pole techniques not properly described using these? Or is the pole an imported weapon as well, and the original theories kept and never adapted to Hung Kuen?

Might be a very stupid question, and I have yet to dive into this weapon (greatly looking forward though), but I was just wondering as personal study of the bridges and other weapon forms I know showed me that applying the 12 bridges to them worked quite well.

It's all just theory of course, not practice, but interesting nonetheless.

well, weapon fighting is in many points VERY different from the barehanded fighting. half of the sap yi ji kiu sau principles would not make any sense with the long pole. extensionof your arms etc., of course, but the fighting strategy etc., different game for different weapons
