not to throw the spanner into the works,
but....in our Hung-Ga, the opening sequence of FHSYK is all about waist!
The body is very serpentine when shifting (opening movement is in YJKYM, press, mai yun jiew gang, chum kiu, thengrab and pull to waist while shifting-some shift from YJKYM to Gung-Bo, but we pretty much keep YJKYM and allow the waist to do this.) This is similar to single hand tui-sao in Tai Gik Kuen, if you catch my meaning, and can be used when crowded/cornered, with nowhere to escape, you coil and shift.
The next move si twist the opposite way and palm strike, then face center press palm, etc.
The second section also has a strong emphasis on waist coiling with the left and right soft bridge.

Hi All,

Wow...I'm somewhat suprised at a few of the comments about my sigung's article on ging, especially those about the subject (ging) being "low level", use of the waist. In my humble opinion, a lack of use of the waist in HG has nothing to do with HG, but everything to do with ignorance and short-sightedness of practitioners.

As far as the comment about ging being "low level," all I can say is ging is mostly felt, hardly seen, and to know for sure you have to feel it for yourself. Maybe you would like visit one of our schools and see for yourself?

right, you must have difficulty reading. i said;

"writing about ging is interesting but a stale subject. its a low level argument/subject."

meaning, we all learn how to use ging and it is a the most basic aspect of chinese arts, IMO. sorry i didnt know this was a nazi germany forum YHGSKFF whatever

maybe i should look into how much it would cost me to drive to syracuse and back to get a lesson in ging..lolo

Ah yes the discussion...

Regarding for example the opening section of fuhok, but also in ggffk. To me that is not meant practical either... We don't do the opening section of fuhok in YJKYM but standing 'straight up' (IMHO YJKYM is not a fighting stance either). But standing straight up doesnt mean you dont use other power then external from the arms either. Subtle "enhancements" originating from the waist add to the power. I think doing them standing straight up allows you to develop the use of that power better as less other movements are involved. Same for GGFFK (although standing in horse also trains/explains other aspects of the art).

I think these sections from the forms are important in understanding/developing power from the waist (or dan tian or internal power or whatever you like to call it) and you should not view them as direct practical applications for streetfights.

Forms are not just full of fighting applications, they are like a book that explain fighting applications, explain methodical training, hei gung and more.

I think that "isolations" is a good way to describe this.

To be more specific.. some of these movements are for training your wrist, showing you how to keep flexible and move properly. The movements are essential in many applications (redirecting, escaping, grabbing, controlling, etc.), but are not applications in themselves..
