How about a Hung kuen wiki ?

After putting a post on the HunG Kuen encyclopaedia thread I was struck with a thought.

I must point out straight away that I am an ideas man. I can’t programme and since I learnt in English I would be of limited help in the technical sections since I don’t know the language.

The idea however is a nice one. A weekiepedia essentially an illustrated dictionary or a-z of hung kuen.

Each entry can be relatively self contained and an a to z structure is nice and simple.

E.g. Tarn Sau, : Begin with a literal English translation, follow with an illustration of how to do a correct Tarn Sau, an illustration of how to use it in defence, an illustration of how to use it in attack, end with a brief explanation of its role in fight strategy.

Such a wiki would be incredibly useful not only to people like me who learnt in English so I don’t know what any of the Chinese means, but to beginners who would use it as a refresher and intermediates who could use it to widen their overview of the art. It would be an excellent for dipping since each section would be broadly self contained. It would also be very useful to anyone using forums such as this who are excluded from some of the strands because they lack the correct technical language.

There are of course many obstacles e.g who would host it and who would monitor it. None the less it could be an exciting project that everyone could join in with.

I maintain a private wiki on my own server as a notebook on training, using the Mediawiki () software. I use the player extension () to allow embedding of videos I take at training, but for a public wiki there are extensions which allow you to embed youtube videos.

A public Hung Gar wiki is an interesting idea, if implemented well. For example, to minimise debates over what is "correct", you would want to have a template established that facilitated different views on concepts, applications and forms.

For anyone interested in ideas for creating their own wiki-notebook, here's an image of the template I use for form pages.

The samzi gwan image is a place holder and the "Interpretations" section is where I embed videos of the form.

This works well enough for a single contributor wiki dealing with one school's interpretation of a form, but probably not for a multiple contributor wiki. For pages dealing with concepts and individual techniques (eg elements, sounds, chi sau, ging, stances, historical figures etc) I use a slightly different approach.

The "Training Notes" page linked in the directory is where I put all my daily notes (taken in class using a blackberry, e-mailed to myself and then cut and pasted to the training notes page to then be cut and pasted onto the relevant pages when I have time).

If anyone is interested in setting up their own private wiki, PM me if you want tips on how I did it (although I can't promise my way is the best way).

HungKyun.com, looking forward to the expansion then. Good idea's. SO far the forum is going in a way that I think such a portal might function very well.
