"In my practice, GGFFK has become the engine so to speak, it has a great flow and strong methods of developing structure and body development. GGFFK also teaches a great base way of moving and system of movements. "

"gjfkk = orthodox Siulam, mainly "hard bridges, firm stances", a great tool to develop a fundamental structure and body mechanics. gjk = ABC, ffk = fighting "

That is my viewpoint as well. Gung Ji is developmental-gung-faht-lien gung. Develops a strong foundation, develops the delivery system.
Fook Fu is kuen-faht-fighting technique
When I play GJFFK, I use large stances, longer bridges, larger movements.

"FHSYK feels like a bunch of ways to expand off of the base methods found in GGFFK, other ways to use bridges, or other answers to some of the things one might encounter."

Yes, I feel that the short bridges and softer techniques are the focal point in FHSYK

"I find the body development portions in FHSYK inferior to GGFFK (that also doesnt seem to be the focus in FHSYK)."
If GGFFK is the engine so to speak, FHSYK would be all the modifications to the vehicle. For that reason, were I to pick one or the other to do exclusively, it would be GGFFK, hands down."

Here, I disagree. The shorter bridge requires a different type of power generation, and in FHSYK, the short power, shock power, whipping, coiling etc are developed. The power is refined, rather than gross. There are sublties in FHSYK that you cannot get from GJFFK

"fhsyk = Southern Chinese MMA (Siulam, Hung Ga, Choi Ga, Lohon Fatga/Hap Ga...); short and long bridges, hard and soft bridges, tiger/crane, a more complex system on its own."

Agreed. FHSYK takes your Hung Kuen to a different level.
When I play FHSYK, save for the Hop-Ga sections, I play it with emphasis on shorter bridges and stances, more coiling, foa /chum, toe/tun. FHSYK has more of the Fukien Siu-Lum flavor.

ok, to continue this thread;
do you play FHSYK any different than GJFFK? If so, how?
Do you do any specific drills to develop the skills introduced in FHSYK? Such as reaction/sensitivity drills for short bridges?

Where GGFFK is mostly one breath - one technique, FHSYK requires you to breath differently.

One of the things I do is doing three sections of forms and repeat them for 3 minutes with a minute rest in between. Theres the old bit of Hung Kuen you repeat after the 47-56 which is great for this. The final bit the breathing is quite different. When the breathing is not correct it leaves you grasping for air.

Fu Hok can be seperated in many sections with different flavors so it covers different aspects of fighting, those you can make to drills..in my school nobody has reached fu hok yet but in my school in Manila a few guys learned it already and there we did that...fu hok gives many ideas;short bridges, long bridges, soft, hard etc. so you can apply them to different combat situations...
I always wondered how others use the drunken step in application ?
We train them to bring the opponent off ballance by sort of falling in the opponent (in a controlled manner)

Fu Hok starts there where ggffk ends...it leads from one road to many.

Btw,are we the only ones that do the 2 identical parts just before the 10 tigers left and right ?
In prior versions I have learned you do both parts starting with left kiu sao
and so on but in our version when u finish the part with a left ping choi we step forward and turn into the side horse fronting with right kiu sao and ending the identical second part with a right ping choi....

TT: my sigung says that ping cheui is generally dyun kiu, short bridge. do you use your ping cheui in fuk fu kyun differently? gung ji kyun has basically just one ping cheui, in ffk there are plenty of them.

all the best

PM: Yes and no-it is the same punch but in the beginning stages, I teach it two ways-in fighting drills, it is quick, shorter with focus on snap back. In beginner forms and line drills,larger- deep bow and arrow, rear leg locked, back and shoulders straight, emphasis on shifting horse to bow.
Only after they have pretty much internalized this, which is usually at FHSYK level, (again, depending on the individual's capacity) do I adjust their stance and structure. So, yes it is dyun kiu.
Like a fruit, it needs to ripen. ;-)
