You guys are amazing. I dabbled in the FHSYK before I went back and started really learning the KGFFK from the beginning. I too saw it as just a hook, palm strike to chest, followed by a groin/Tan Tien punch. Looking at it from a Judo perspective, it is so obvious that they could easily be takedowns with the right leg positioning. It's like those visual/perspective riddles, the old woman/young girl type of images.

There are several in the KGFFK too, come to think about it. Some are a little harder to see since there is no footwork in places. The Tearing cloth and splitting Gold after the two Kiu Sau sequences, for instance.

MMA? Sure thing. Rolling around on the floor with sweaty guys wearing just shorts? Uh... not today.

Here's to cheating, stealing, fighting, and drinking.
If you cheat, may you cheat death.
If you steal, may you steal a woman's heart.
If you fight, may you fight for a brother.
And if you drink, may you drink with me.

Hello Asmo,

I agree "conservation of angular momentum" is a productive line of development...

Especially as related to bridging focus, using the cross stances (Jau Mah/ Tau Mah/ Lau Mah) in shifting between the wider stances (Sei Ping Bat Fun Mah & Ji Ng Chin Gung Mah), definitely improves control...

Now, on the subject of that technique:

IMO, of itself, a step-through entry, with a hooking head punch against anybody who is anybody is already two invitations to a knuckle sandwich ...

Rather, setting up from outside, and using that Gwa Chui on your entry, it covers you moving in...

If your setup was good, it will contact, either his head or his arm (aim for his head). you are now affecting his leverage and balance...

If he blocks, snatch his arm down and do your step-through entry. If you hit him in the head, or he just covers up, maintain the pressure initiated by the Gwa, so pinning him for your entry...

How your leg engages with his will be dictated by your facing/ angle of entry, and depends on the effect that dealing with your Gwa has had on his footing...

There are five basic variations to be found in the sets:

GJFFK: Gwa/ step-through Chin Ji Pek Jeung

FHSYK: Gwa/ step-through Ngau Gok Chui

SYK (Pau Ying section): Gwa/ step-through So Chui Lin Waan

SYK (Fun Gam section) : Gwa/ step-through Sap Ji Fun Gam

Fu Hok Chaak: Gwa/ step-through with Bat Fun Jin Chui

Each provides situational control for developing contingency...

I think most folks will find that trying to Gwa a boxer's Jab is like trying to swat a fly with a mini-sledge...

Use that Gwa to cover your entry!

:D

Best,

Mike

Daifong,

Blast from the past! Hehe, I had to re-read the entire thread before reading yours so I had a clue what it was all about again... Threads like this rock, we need to do this more often. I have some idea's but I'm preparing my trip to Franky coming week so it has to wait, but if anyone else....

I've recently been working on some (self defense) drills and been using the gwa choi in those like you explain above. Cover and enter, not like a defensive move against an incoming attack or anything... Come to think about it, the gwa choi/ping choi combinations at the start of FFK, I always understood these to be defenses against incoming punches too. But those are not jabs, which are faster, of course...

Heh, this thread is getting a whole new meaning for me :D

Good reply,
Asmo

Well, I've also seen Gwa being used for "hooking down corner punches" and for "gaap chui/sau chui".
I'm not sure if Mike means Jit Gam Chui here and sees it as an integral part of Rattle fists (he might be just reaching a finger as help, so I wouldn't want to take his whole hand on the gwa. With Mike it's always he knows even more then he's telling hahaha). Snatching can be done at several parts of the Rattle fists, just in order to react on the opponent.

--

Sap Ying Kyun - different order of the Rattle fists (at least in our lineage) compared to Fu Hok. No Jit Gam Chui entry first.
Fu Hok Chaak - it has Jit Gam Chui with the body turning followed by Pau Chui, and to me it rather functions as a warning on how open you get.
[Now, on the other hand, Gwa with no body turning followed by Pau Chui/Gap Chui/Sau Chui, perhaps even followed by another Gwa Chui and Pau Chui, is a total different story to me.]

Changing sides from Jit Gaam Chui would imply different footwork to me (see Choy Lee Fut), or rather a straight punch instead of the ox-horn. Rather close-range arm thechniques, midline horse - all things that are quite difficult to execute all in once. Besides, Rattle fists can be a set-up already, so why a set-up for a set-up? And why stay fixed to the order of the forms?
