Tiger and Crane School of Kung Fu

Postby LanJie » Sun Aug 02, 2009 9:45 pm

I have read from a few sources that some masters have built a whole style of kung fu around Fu Hok Seung Ying Kuen.

I was wondering if any one knows about the style, current masters, the curriculum, and the differences in relation to Hung Gar.

Thank you.

hello,

i personaly think in most of the cases it is kind of misconception. here are couple of reasons why:

Common known fhsyk was created by Wong Feihung. Lam Saiwing has popularised fu hok seung ying kyun a lot - performing it very often (i have heard somewhere that he was called "Mr. Tiger and Crane", Fu Hok Sin Saang), and writting a book on it - the book was actually written by his students), his and especially his nephew's (my sigung Lam Jou's) system was sometimes called Fu Hok Paai, "School of Tiger and Crane". Grandmaster Lam Jou' school and his students/grand students still use the famous diamond shaped tiger crane logo

Image

when i have been visiting various families and lineages of Hung Kyun in China, they usually referred to our system as "Tiger and Crane Hung Kyun", Fu Hok Hung Kyun.

also, fhsyk was later popularised as one of the wushu forms, and many people have specialised in it (not only wushu people of course). all these can be the reasons why some sources speak about "Tiger and Crane System".

however, check eg. http://www.namyang1954.com/tigercranekungfu.html i am not sure how this system is related to common Hung Kyun (might be a pre-WFH version of fhsyk), although the text speaks about same roots, ie. Hung Heigun and Fong Wingcheun. the question is - which system was build around WHAT set called fhsyk. eg. Wong Kiew Kit sifu of Malaysia also teaches a fhsyk set, which is an old set with Southern Siulam roots, but not related to WFH's fhsyk.

Thank you very much for your information and insight.

Your explanation was very helpful. It makes sense that there would be confusion between Hung Gar as a style and its most famous set Tiger and Crane. I have heard and read about Hung Gar being referred to as the Tiger and Crane style many times.

I have seen versions of Sifu Wong Kiew Kit’s Tiger and Crane form and it quite different from the Canton Style Hung Gar version.

I read the information on the Nam Yang website and it seems to be a pre Wong Fei Hong version of Hung Gar, like you said.

Being a Pre-Wong Fei Hong version must be why the curriculum is very different . The form Sam Chien is very important form in this school. I know that Five Ancestor Fist- Ngo Cho Kun has a Sam Chien form (Three Wars).

This what I was able to find out about Nam Yang from their site.

The Tiger Crane Combination Style
http://www.namyang1954.com/history.html

Taught at the Nam Yang Pugilistic Association, founded by Grand Master Ang Lian Huat in 1954.

Passed down by Grand Master to his successor, Master Tan Soh Tin.

The Style has 11 Hand Forms plus numerous advanced hand forms.

Known Tiger Crane Hand Sets

1. Sam Chien: This a core set. It teaches the basics of Fu Hok Seung Ying Style, develops geng and leads the practitioner to develop Iron body skills.

2. Tet Bay Sam Chien

3. Sip Ji Koon

4. Charp Tsar Tai Por

5. Si Men Dao Dui

6. Tien Tay Lin Chien

7. Hu Die Shuang Fei

8. Pei Ho Tien Sit

9. Tay Chung Koon

10. Ti Goo Lip Chiok

11. Ben Hor Choot Nar

Thanks again for your help.

Regards,

Steve

Thank you Sifu Bolte.

That explains the Sam Chien form.
