Paolo Cangelosi - Chan Hon Chung?

Postby markt » Sun Jun 28, 2009 4:56 am

Just stumbled across this guy on the web : http://www.sifupaolocangelosi.com/ and found on some other sites, that he '...followed Chan Hon Chung for 9 years..'.

I do not know about any other westerners who spent much time training with Chan Hon Chung and his students except for Jim Uglow. Probably there are others that I don't know about, but it seems to me that they would have been there late in his life when he wasn't teaching too much, and his more senior students likely would have been training junior students..

Does anyone have any more information on him ? Curious..

i do not know if/how many years exactly has Cangelosi sifu spent under Grandmaster Chan Honjung, but he has learned quite a lot, at least gjffk, fhsyk, syk, wu dip jeung... i have a German article with photos of Cangelosi sifu with Grandmaster Chan Honjung form 1983 and 1987.

he teaches plenty of styles, which i found kind of suspicious, but i have to admitt that i like his Hung Kyun - i have seen his isntructional tapes on wu dip jeung and gung ji fuk fu kyun and they are one of the best available.

Grandmaster Chan Honjung had btw. plenty of foreign students (in the documentary you have one doin fhsyk) - i have couple of articles from old magazines about foreign students studying under him for months or longer in the 1970's, long before Uglow sifu (one of the Hung Kyun pioneers in Western Europe) or Cangelosi sifu. Grandmaster Chan Honjung was very famous in Hong Kong, he was a long time president of Hong Kong Chinese Martial Arts Association.

Thanks for the reply..

I was also curious about who that was practicing in his studio during the documentary. Does anyone know who that gentleman was ?

As for Paolo Cangolosi, in some articles, I read that he followed Chan Hon Chung for 9 years, but not sure what it means. Did he live in HK for 9 years.. or did he visit him for a couple months over a 9 year period during that time ?

Also - he would have been learning from some of Chan Hon Chung's senior students during that time most likely - did he continue learning/training Hung Kuen with them after Chan sigung passed away as Jim Uglow has done ?

in the article he talks about the form "Loon Kou Tiet Kiu", which will be taught in the lineage of Tit Kiu Sam, and was not integrated in WFH Lineage. As he discribes it is a Chi-Kung form "after" Tit Tsin Kuen....

Any infos on that Form?

Subitai, in a friendly atmosphere here on the forum nobody even thinks of any pissing context, no problem, go ahead :-) i also appreciate your no-nonsense, innovative and modern approach to the training of the traditional art in the modern world, as well as other guys (Franky, TT... )

the video was already extensively discussed here:

http://www.hungkyun.com/forum/viewtopic ... ight=mitts

so please continue there, not to hijack this thread.

i would be very interested to see some of your focus mitts drills, and of course other guys as well (TT eg., who as i know regularly trains with the mitts ). not many HK people seem to use the mitts in their training - if i remember correctly, only Franky has shared some of his drills here on the forum, all other have just criticised or praised the video, without showing their stuff or admitting all they do is punching the air and sets.

same thing with our another vid - some saan sau that my sifu has taught

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GdxrbowD5s

quite different from most of the over choreographed Shaw Bros like applications. i always say: i sincerelly hope that we do stuff differently :-)

---

to Paolo Cangelosi and of his focus mitts drills: i like it, why not? just the footwork, to me it is too "free" JKD like. we also use gou jong ma, "high combat stances" in most of the drills and flexible footwork, but no skipping and jumping around.

I'd love to share, but I don't practice them. Bagwork, and after the summer holiday I hopefully start sparring up again as my steady sparring partner had a injury...

Otherwise I'd be happy to share, even if I knew they suck as I know putting them out here on the forum usually gives me feedback from the more experienced members on the forum I can use to improve :)

Those that do, don't be shy guys, and don't be afraid especially, you can only move forward from criticism.
