"Old" Hung Kyun and "New" (Wong Feihung) Hung Kyun

Postby Asmo » Sat Jun 06, 2009 6:24 am

Getting something like that done is best done using just a few exercises Vaulander. Like the ping choi / yat gee choi combo. (reverse punch in bow, standing punch in horse). In forms you're too bussy doing a lot of techniques just once. Doing the same few techniques many times (slowly!) after another makes it much easier to feel your body and adjust. Over time (take months) you will notice the progress.

Stance training is also very important, if not THE most important rraining in Hung Kuen. It will really improve your base. As will doing pushups.

Also while doing this, stop when you get tired, else technique will suffer which is exactly the point. Pain and getting tired can be got during stancetraining etc.

Just my advice :)

So Ping Choi is the reverse flat fist from Ziwu Ma, and Yat Gee Choi is the sun fist in Sei Ping Ma? Thank you, I shall write that down in my terms list. And practice, of course.

what is ziwu ma? sounds like you are mixing dialects. Even though Manderin is the language chosen by Mainand to be the official dialect, Hung-Gar is from Southern China-Guangdong (Canton) and among the fiercly loyal Hung-Gar practitioners, Cantonese is the preferred dialect.
Still unsure what zi-wu is....

My apologies. I am using terms from LSW's Kung Gee treatise, where there are like 3-4 terms for every stance.
Is the board accepted term for Forward/bow&arrow stance Jing Ma?
Horse stance - Ma Bu/Seipin Ma?
Cat stance - Dew/Diu Ma?
Twist stance - Lao Ma?

I must say I am lost in the fog when techniques are discussed. Does anyone know of a good site/page where I can learn the terms?

ji ng ma...shi/xi wu ma
ji ng ma is cantonese..u just used the mandarin before..no worries.

many words/terms are the same but i noticed that from school to school they use for some words different names..

for example some say nau ma some say lau ma..N words are often pronounced with an L like Nei (you) sounds like Lei ...

Found a site with different terms and translations. Time to re-read a lot of posts to finally understand them, hehe.

ji ng is also a phrase relating to five o'clock describing the position of the feet when one is in this stance-front foot at 12:00, rear foot at 5:00-seems to be more of a Hong Kong term than a mainland one.

TT: but ji and ng are on a straight line, like 12 and 6 on a western clock. (ji hour = "midnight", 11 PM to 1 AM, ng hour = "noon" 11 AM to 1 PM). "ng" in "ji ng ma" is 午, not 五. where did you guys get "five"?

never heard that before, i think it is not correct. anyway, in correct Chinese it would be ng ji ma 五字馬, not 字五馬 (as in yat JI cheui, chin JI sau, gung JI fuk fu kyun, ji JI dip jeung, sap JI fan gam, yi JI fan gam, yi Ji kim yeung ma etc.)

franky, you said "ji ng ma in chinese and also gong bou". Do you say they are the same? i think thay not (completely) same.

according to my sifu, gong bo is the bow stance. ji ng ma is a bow stance which was taken in by a step forward, and not just by rotating the hip (from ma bo). so the end position is the same, only the way you get there is different.

kind like ka ho ma and la o ma, or ma bo and sei ping ma, same end position, different way to get in the position.
no rotor --> no motor
