Most streetfights don't end up on the ground, unless one of the combatants wants the fight to go there. In that case, it can of course. The statistic that is most often cited to back up that statement was by the Gracie's if I remember correctly. It referred to police altercations, and it is no surprise that the police would want a guy on the ground if he is fighting, that is where the handcuffing often takes place.

I agree with the above stated on Hung Gar though, it works great against everyone I have played with. You do need to know the enemy technology a bit though.

statistics or not(that one im sure is inaccurate), the fact remains, if you are a hung gar player, your game is to stay OFF the ground. Which means if your opponent gets you on the ground, you are playing his game not yours. in which case, you are losing the fight.

the moral? Regardless of "statistics", common misconceptions, or long held beliefs, use your art properly, and you can defend against all types of opponents.

My friend which is the number one guy on the wrestling team, well...lol, he looked at videos of Hung Gar forms, and told me he couldn't find a good way of getting a practitioner of our style to the ground. Unless he wanted a foot or knee...or shin to the face. So that makes me feel good.

Also, I sparred with a grappler today, bareknuckle, and tiger claw throat, while having full mount really worked. YAY ME!!!

HAHAHAHAHA!!! I know, we have a couple of guys who don't mind doing it, of course we do have rules, tap outs all that good stuff.

One of them is Muay Thai, then an MMA, then a wrestler, and then another Muay Thai guy.

What I'm saying is that these ground martial arts are getting WAY too much credit!!! First off if you train your stances and footwork properly its going to be extremely difficult for ANYONE to knock you to the ground. Secondly if you do get to the ground thats when you have to get real nasty and unless you give up there is always a way out of any situation. I train very traditionally we don't train ground specifically, but if you know your technique and condition your body you always have the tools to take out any opponent. So everyone needs to train and trust in what your Sifu teaches you and don't give in to the hype of what the TV and magazine articles say about MMA and ground arts, because they are sports and not real street fighting.

Dude - just some food for thought:

Wrestlers and judoka also practise years of trying not to be put on the ground, and against other skilled wrestlers/judoka to boot... Yet the end-result of every round in every wrestling or judo bout is almost always inevitably that at least one of the 2 will end up on the ground. Which of the 2 ends up there is a question of skill, and with equal skill it comes down to size, strength, or a toss-up (luck).

Now I'm not disputing that years of stancework and proper rooting/ structure won't help you - you may even up manage to up your odds to that toss-up, depending on some transferable skills and raw athletic talent (GSP is a perfect example of this, BTW). But at best, all other things being equal it remains a toss-up.

Granted in wrestling or judo bouts, both opponents are trying desperately to hit the ground (though with a different opinion on who should be on top), but the fact is that it is impossible to 100% guarantee you will not end up there. That's what I meant by superlatives - try to stay away for "100%" this or that, there are no absolute certainties in anything, least of all fighting.

It is true however that the years of submissions fighting being the only game in town are over. Last UFC was basically all standup, granted dished-out by individuals who are skilled in both stand-up and ground game... but the balance has swung back to the left, and with enough strikers who are willing to take chances and not fear the ground it's refreshing to see striking delivering the ass-kicking it was meant to.

mattkuen,

BJJ is far from brute force. And HK is not invincible.

From reading your post, I would guess that you have only been training a short while. With experience you will hopefully be able to understand martial arts a little bit more and open your mind a little bit.
You might disagree with what's been said here so far by Mok and others - and I am not concerned with convincing you of anything - You will understand more as you mature. Good luck with your training.
