You've probably all seen this one already... but I think it deserves to be up here:

Here's an observation/question regarding Jongs that id like you guys to weigh in on. This video has him moving fast, and striking hard on the Jong, showing coordination and a good amount of iron palm/body/whatever strength(he hits is hard and his arms seem ok).

What I do not see however, is movement or body connection. The strikes look like the are originating in the shoulders at best. As I am learning and interpreting it, the WC Jong is about technique, yes. But on a deeper level, it is truly teaching me a lot about spinal rotation and how that affects short power and body connection in general. How the twist of the spine affects the placement of the arms, and also influences the hips, which adds to the bigger movement based Hung Ga stuff.

So keeping that in mind:
1 - Is there stuff im not seeing in this video that relates to that?
2 - is that NOT the point of this Jong Excersise?
3 - can you elaborate more on the origin of this video? Lineage, etc.

ps - as i watch it a second time, its possible theres some nuance that i'm missing. again, elaborate on what you guys see/like about this video.

pps - in much of it, he is sitting in square horse(4 point stance?) facing the jong. What does this teach about positioning to the opponent? One of the things that the Jongs legs teach is positioning against their knee.

"TT - your link is dead."
,,as it should be. It was of some guy playing the Fu Hok Seurng Ying Kuen on the jong-totally horrible, complete nonesense.
As far as the Wing Chun jong is concerned, different Sifus teach the sequence for totally different purposes. Some teach the jong (besides as a dictionary of methods and techniique) as a tool for developing proper position, where they seem to slide in and out of the arms, rather than slamming it. Some use it as a conditioning tool, others teach power generation, etc. I see it as all of the above rather than for one specific usage.
So, it would totally depend on what the person is trying to accomplish at that particular time.

that makes sense. Sometimes I will hit harder, sometimes I will move smoother when doing the same set. So chances are this is a single set used to train only a handfull of the possibilities?

As my Hung Kuen comes from Chan Hon Chung lineage, we also use the dummy. There's not really a form or set, but it is used as a tool for training.
In addition to the things mentioned above, it can help with training co-ordination and the ability to use both arms at the same time.

well, like anything, your Gung-Fu is only as limited as you make it.
My Jook Lum teacher has us perform Sam Bo Ging slow, and soft llike Tai-Chi, fast and hard, moderately paced, or concentrating on the breath, or on the elbows, or on intent, or,or, or...
So, the jong-YOUR jong, or YOUR sets, or YOUR applications, etc, become YOUR training methods,YOUR philosophy, YOUR Gung-Fu.

Some good observations there... especially on stance/angles, and power generation. I agree that I've seen better - in fact I can do better.

But I still think it's not bad at all. Definately discussion worthy.

TEN TIGERS SAID (Jook Lum teacher has us perform Sam Bo Ging slow, and soft llike Tai-Chi, fast and hard, moderately paced, or concentrating on the breath, or on the elbows, or on intent, or,or, or... )

thats interesting that you say that, i used to play my forms in three ways
1. slow , tai chi -ish, focusing on one move at a time
2. fast
3. with a fluidity , where the whole form would flow as one big move,

no one showed me this, and for some reason i stopped,
hmmm

Delay is no problem, if it still goes ahead in the future!

Also looking forward to that movie. Still preproduction phase?
