Luk Ah Choy

Luk Ah Choy is someone who has always interested me because I suppose not much is known about him.
Apart from some stuff I've seen on the web and of course ''Challenge of the Masters'' he strikes me as an important ancestor of our style.

Luk Ah Choy
Luk Ah Choy was another well known disciple of the abbot Gee Sin Sim See and class mate of Hung Hei Guan. He, unlike many other Hung Gar masters was a manchu descendant who is credited for his efforts to spread the art of Hung Gar. It is indicated by some sources that Luk Ah Choy started his gung fu training as a young boy under a monk named Li Bakfu who taught Luk Ah Choy the FA Kuen (Flower Fist), a northern style of Gung Fu. He became an expert in this style.

Luk Ah Choy trained under Gee Sim for a long time. Acording to one story when Gee Sim heard about Hung Hei Guan's school he sent Luk Ah Choy to FA city to further develop his skills under Hung Hei Guan and help him with his new school which had already became one of the most famous Gung Fu schools in the southern China. Hung Hei Guan passed all his skills on to Luk Ah Choy, teaching Ah Choy everything he knew including the famous Tiger/Crane Set - Fu Hok Seung Ying Kuen which he had developed. Luk Ah Choy became an expert in Hung Gar Kuen. He was later send to Canton by Hung Hei Guan to help and spread the art of Hung Gar in Canton. According to some sources Luk Ah Choy opened a school in Canton where he taught Hung Gar openly to the public.

Luk Ah Choy's best student was Wong Tai (and later Wong Kei Ying) who learned the complete system under his sifus instructions and became an expert in the Hung style. From this point onwards, the traditions and teachings of Hung Gar were carried on by the three generation of the Wong Family; Wong Tai, his son Wong Kei Ying and grandson Wong Fei Hung. It is believed that Luk Ah Choy died at the age of 68.

What interests me is the development of the system from LAC to Wong Tai and so on, and what you guys might know or think is still evident from that era, today?

Would it be Old Hung Kuen? Or maybe the so called ''village styles''?

The guy I am traininng with in Hung Kuen, Chow Hung, is about 73 yrs old from Guangzhao. His lineage comes from Luk Ah-Choy and not through WFH. Interestingly enough, it has the same forms(at least in name) as Chris' Fut Ga. Dahn Gung Fuk-Fu Kuen, Seurng Gung Fuk Fu Kuen, and Fu Hok Seurng Ying Kuen. He also mentioned a SamjienTiet Sien Kuen, but I have to clarify that with him. He may have not been referring to his branch as having it, but might have picked it up.
The way he plays his Hung Kuen is all about short strikes, short bridge. His horse is narrower-wider than shoulder, but not the big,wide, deep, sei ping ma. He is also very quick, and agile,and throws rapid-fire techniques. Of course, this might also be an influence from his Dai Sing Pek Gwa, which he also learned. He was a classmate of Chan Sau-Jung under Gen Duk-Hoi. (I am not learning Monkey. Evidently, I am "too old, and too big!")
He also teaches me iron palm and shuai-jiao,and cum na sao. Oh yeah. And tea. His two passions are Gung-Fu, and tea. He poured me some tea that went for 1500. dollars. Tasted like...well, evidently I don't have such a refined palate...
