This is a great performance of the Pek Kwar Dan Dou. It is said it comes from Ken Tak Hoi's Tai Shing Pek Kwa Moon style (also written Tai Sing Pap Kar).

Great sabre skills by grand master Lam Chun Sing.

The Pek Gwa saber is found is several styles nowadays.
I've seen it in Choy Lee Fut, Dragon style and more.
All have made some adaptions to their own style, to fit the northern skills into their own system.

Already in Hong Kong several masters picked up this sabre when Tai Shing Pek Gwa Mun grand master Ken Tak Hoi came there. And I believe, grand master Chan Sau Chung of Tai Shing Pek Gwa Mun gave seminars all over USA in this wonderfull saber set.

I re-learned this knife when GM Chan Sau Chung came to San Francisco about 10 years ago. Being able to cross-reference this version with Lam Family's was both interesting and educational, lots of insight from comparing approaches, to be sure!

Of these (after my own Sifu, of course), I liked the Choy Li Fut version. A good degree of athleticism expressed, and a clearly martial intent. Of course they had to add some extra loops because they're Choy Li Fut, but what the hey

I will never get sick of watching Sigung Lam Chun Sing's Kung Fu. His intensity is insane.

Shameless self promotion alert! Here is my version. Sifu made me slow down when I did this as we recorded for a Sidai who lives far and wanted it for a reference.



Note our version is a little shorter then the Lam version. Sifu took out a couple of spins. Also I am 99% sure he learned this set from Sigung Lam Jo, Though he may have learned from Ken Dak Hoi. We have the Pek Kwar hand sets in our lineage and I do know my Sifu learned it those hand sets from Ken Dak Hoi.

I gotta say Yogi...I think I like your DO set the best overall the ones presented here.

I wanted to like the Choy li fut one as well, but he hit the ground and couple of times. It's funny because Ten Tigers pointed out in a sword thread long ago something about being able to "WRAP Sandwiches" with that sword.

...and you know how much Hung Ga Guys love sandwiches?????


As for me personally, I gave back the Hung version of Pek Gwa Darn do in favor of what is my opinion more authentic...the Bak Sil Lum version.

That's exactly the manner of play that I was mentioning, the Pek Gwa Broadsword, as played by members of the Pek Gwa school today.

That young guy is probably a student of GM Chow Keung's.

Of course, it's always good to see the play of our late Sibaak, Lam Chunhin, as well!

Alex Woo is a student of Sifu Calvin Chin, successor to GM Kwong Tit Fu, one of the earlier generation of Hung Ga instructors in the USA. Sifu Chin is quite active with kids programs and lion dance these days, and makes visits to Lam Family possible for students who are interested. Some Wushu is also incorporated, as an alternate approach to performance flair.
