No no no...not possible, IMO.
I know Cung Le, he's a good guy and I respect his work ethic. Very few could hope to match his determination.
I've spent some time with him on the set of KWOON. He has personally told me what his training history was at the time. I had done fight scenes and choreography with him. Believe me when I say I know this mans opinion of Kung Fu and Hung Gar specifically. I don't want to go too much into detail either.
From what I know of him...I strongly doubt that Cung would have ever practiced Hung Gar...in the modern Orthodox sense. I have heard him say multiple times about what I was doing as a choreographer in "Death Vs Kung Fu Carwash" (ie Hung Gar),
"Not MY type of fighting". But he went along with it because he had to. He is of course a professional
The only possibility would be that I met another Vietnamese sifu in San Jose, CA. area ( I forgot his name) who does his own Vietnamese STYLE / TYPE of HONG JIA. I know he was a friend of Cungs, because that's how we were introduced to Cung for his part in our movie for KWOON. However, I repeat that from the attitude that Cung had displayed to me about Kung Fu in general... that Viet HONG style (if you have seen it) does not resemble Modern Orthodox Hung Kuen. I certainly don't believe that if Cung learnt any Vietnamese Version of Hung, that he would in anyway keep it as a part of his training regimen.
I especially don't believe that Hung Training of any type is given ANY CREDIT by him as part of his preparations for any of his fights. If so, I would be INCREDIBLY surprised.
