What is the sound of one-hand clawing?

I don't really think that the conversation was ever heading down the path of sticking blindly to tradition over innovation (at least I hope not) ... I though it was more of a conversation about whether or not things have been incorporated/adjusted to modern methods, or if they were really already there to begin with, which is what some are hinting at.

Just to throw another one in the works ... in the video, you see some guys holding their fists just under the chin before they throw their punches out. Hung Kuen/CMA or boxing .. and why ? ;)

mok, I am, banditshaw - yes.

markt: i still do not agree about paau jaang. paau jaang (tai kiu, not bik kiu) is not about taking punishment/absorbing/etc., please read again my description how paau jaang is performed - it is not just about the hand, but stance, footwork, body and head. although it may look similar to MMA shielding (which works perfectly, ours could be performered like this) as you said, it is not - when 2 do the same thing, it is not the same thing. btw. there are many both traditional (like Philipino) and modern (KEYSI KFM) systems using extensively this type and similar of "blocking". eveyrybody does it differently, but the question is - does it work or not? last thing, as i wrote before - it is just one of many defensive techniques against this type of attack, ie. roundhouse something, that we train. we drill chyun kiu, chau kyun, laan tau etc. a lot, although i have no doubt we drill them differently than a lot of the HK guys out there.

to your other question about the "guard": one of many baai jongs (bik kiu); we use. my sifu says, use whatever baai jong you like, HK does not have any specific and only one baai jong. i teach cca. 3-5 different baai jongs, everybody uses the one he feels most comfortable with, or flows from one to another one according the situation and needs. anyway, as most of the drils are for self-defense, we do not bother with baai jong that much - your first move is baai jong, whatever move it is, and than you just keep hitting. your other hand in wu sau position is kind of the baai jong.

context: i of course DO teach stuff that is not part of traditional Hung Kyun, ie. how to throw a low kick/high kick (because we train how to deal with them), basic groundfighting drills (ie. if you end up on the ground, how to get to a better position, STAND UP and continue the fight standing again) etc., but i always say: this is NOT the part of our Hung Kyun Jing Jung curriculum. it is something i want my students to be comfortable with - all ranges, all possible situations and scenarios. this is not the case - modern equipment, but good old HK stuff.

anyway - when people see our Hung Kyun, they always say - hey, you do it diferently. i always say - hey, thanks God, i really hope so. and yes, we listen to AC/DC on the training, not that Wong Feihung tune :D

thank you, i hope to post more vids in the future, eg. more focus mitts drills (with steps, counter attacks, daan/seung fu jaau, po paai sau... )

all the best

Hi.
It is me with paau jaang on the video. I have never trained in box or thaibox. I am only practising Hung Kyun. Paau jaang is very natural move for me, it is simple and powerfull, and I have fighting experience with this cover - many times paau jaang save my head against big strong guys, especialy once against 10 attacking dudes on the street until police stopped them, they were without gloves :)
Paau jang is very universal, if I cannot risk I like to use it against all attacks on the head or to step in/out opponents guard. In close distance it is good for attacking on arms and head from down to up or up to down.
So that is why paau jaang  And sorry for my English

PM, in the mod section the admin asks us to use Yale romantization as much as possible, and says a list with often used terms would be posted soon. Often I have a hard time making out what terms you mean. Partly because we use Dutch in our own training, but also because its been romanticized using another system.

It would be really useful if a basic terminology list would be published in the forum.

Harumoto: :D welcome aboard, dude, nic si z toho nedelej, moje anglictina taky za moc nestoji

Asmo: i hope the server will expand in the near future - articles, vids etc., dictionary as well. anyway, feel free to ask any time, i will be glad to explain. as my sifu and my sibaaks/sisuks/sihingdai are all Chinese, it is kind of natural to me to use the terms i hear them shouting during the training, sorry for that, i definitely do not want to sound too academic.

all the best

PM: That's cool, I don't think we have to agree. :) Maybe if we met in person, it would be easier to explain and understand what the other is thinking.
Anyway, I like your approach of using more modern methods to complement your training and is very much inline with what my sifu has taught me. He's often told me there's no shame in learning from any source - a teacher can learn from a student, or you can learn something from another style. My sifu grew up training with Chan Hon Chung, who was friends with a lot of masters from other styles, so my sifu had a good opportunity to pick up some other 'gems' and also went on to pick up some things from boxing & judo as well. I also like to learn some jujitsu from friends whenever I get the chance. I believe if you see something useful, pride shouldn't prevent you from learning it, so I appreciate the discussion and it's enjoy seeing your point of view. You got me thinking a bit more about 'paau jaang', and I will try experimenting a bit more with it..

Wish you the best in your training and teaching.

markt: yes, i agree. Chan Honjung was one of the top Hung Kyun masters of his time, you are very lucky to learn the stuff he has taught. i saw some old pics of him preparing his guys for full contact matches somewhere - headgear, body protector, gloves... in 1970's, so i do not think we are the only and first guys using "modern" equipment :-)

kind of the motto of our school is "traditional martial art for modern world". we are are one of the most orthodox gungfu schools here, but, "here" means 2008, central Europe.

thanx for the comments, you also got me thinking more about paau jaang :-) (i just went to have a beer with my Muay Thai friend, and we were discussing the pros and contras of this technique).

Bob: i will try to post more videos with more drills, not only on the mitts. anyway, as for your question, you have to train your finger power first, than you can start to train the usage of your fingers strike. we train finger push ups, with the weights (specially designed for finger strength exercises), with the small sand bags (catching and throwing), "four fingers support the heaven" etc. anyway, fists and palm strikes are more reliable in the beginning phases of your training, fingers strikes (tiger claws, cranes beak, biu chyun sau etc.) are kind of more advanced stuff.
