Has anyone heard this before? Shaolin had 113 monks, the 5 ancestors survived the raid by the Manchus, 108 died and the significance of 108 is a reference to the monks that were killed. I read this in a fictional story though so......... what do you think?

I don’t precisely know how this is going to help your martial arts, but according to http://ionamiller.weebly.com/ancient-metrology.html:

"#108 as the Hindu number of the Universe is a circular totality which encodes the structure of Epochs or Divine Ages. Since the incremental 'numbers of the ages' are multiples of #108, when enspiralled along 108 axes, the characters 0 - 6480 all align along the zero/108 axis -- they naturally share the same neighborhood when displayed as "Mandalogs" or "Holotomes". (Miller & Marshall, Syndex I)

By starting with 6 (the first perfect number) and multiplying by the primes in their natural order, we get the sequence 12, 24, 72, 360, 2520, 27720, 360360, 6126120, etc. Each of these numbers forms a geometrical entity, a circular unity, (Holotome). These numbers just happen to be the exact sequence of minimal sums that accomodate the maximal amount of factors of division. Their synergetic qualities have remained unnoticed in classical number theory.

The synchrographic structure of the two ancient Hindu modules of circular unity disclose that the Yugas fall into a perfect tertiary symmetry. The Ages assume a perfect quadric symmetry when spiralled along 108 axes of a number field, array, or matrix. The final number of this synchrograph is 6480. The number of zeros at the end of any astronomical Hindu number is nearly arbitrary. The glyph unifies the two ancient systems."

For what it’s worth, I think it’s much more likely than the Shaolin story!

Thanks for replying, I don't pretend to understand it (it's 8.50am Monday and I haven't really woken up).

I don't pay much attention to these things myself - nothing short of possesssion by Kwan Kung could help my martial arts - but I remembered this thread and thought it might appeal to someone else.

As I tend to 'think in pictures', I'm much, much better with 'word problems'. Could you possibly set those up again, but in a three-dimensional/ linear time context?

Really, I'm just as interested in the relevance of 108 to Siu Lam Kyun as the next person. I personally believe it to be modelled after Buddhist chanting/ prayer sequences. Chanting and the copying of scriptures has kept alive the development of numerous traditions down the ages through many, many periods of change. Philosophy, music, medicine, astronomy, and apparently higher math, as we can see today!

I'd offer to try to find a "scholar" to answer that one for you, but I think you've got a more than adequate grasp of this particular research point...

How about, 'ancient astronomers thought the Sun revolved around the Earth'. It might have been eventually disproven, but that explanation apparently served some form of consistent usefulness. As it stands today, they were not entirely all wrong. Something does indeed revolve around something, no?

Still, you've got me curious now as well, we may very well be on the verge of a conceptual breakthrough that could put all of our Gung Fu development a good many light years ahead!

I´m not sure if you are sarcastic or not (because i get that some times from my sihings too for my more "scientific" point of view and use of math, equations and physic within kung fu) but for me it is the same as you would say "ga sau" is a block downwards.

The facts (the numbers) do not match the explanation. so somewhere is a glitch.
It could be mean anything.
It could mean the explanation is totally false (and the explanation of JPC is the right one) or that there is some (much) deeper toughts behind the whole thing and this explonation is only the surface for the beginners.

I hope you do not think i try to make a joke from this.
but i do not beleave anything because it sounds nice or mistic. And i really do not beleave if i can find something false in it. BUt i really like to learn and thus i ask.
