If you research boxing history you'll find that boxing gloves were introduced as a means against the many fractures boxers got while punching. Sure they'll protect the punchee also, but Subitai is right, it has been introduced to protect the fists against fractures.

they fought bareknuckle before the gloves
and of course they werent made to protect the boxers from each other, but in the end...umm they do. you or subitai or anyone who seems to disagree should spend more time sparring otherwise you wouldnt say that or maybe you been hit to many times lol i dunnno
maybe ill post this topic on a boxing forum and see what i get lol

First, I post my bio (about page) on my webpage that is part of my signature. I don't hide behind a damn pseudonym...ahem like some people. My experience is listed on my free page and yep I've fought professionally...
I do not claim to be a Boxer, I'm a Martial Artist...and Believe me THERE IS A DIFFERENCE. I have knocked out plenty of people in ring and especially on the street and I can also say I’ve been hit. But in my travels I have had access to REAL boxers, with professional training.
Back when I was doing MMA, there was NO weight classes like there is today and you had to fight and Win 3 times to get into the main event. Then you’d fight for the championship. It was Bare knuckle and no rules other than No eye gouging and No biting.
In UFC 7 I was younger and still an unknown. All fighters at that time were fairly big…most were 200lbs or bigger. Back then they had what they called “Alternate fights” I knocked my opponent out but never got a shot at the main draw.
The Russian Absolute, was a 2 day fighting event in Moscow . In which I knocked out my opponent on the first day but then unfortunately for me I drew Ricardo Morais on the 2nd day.
I'm not making excuses, It's just that I was not prepared to fight someone THAT MUCH BIGGER Than me. Ricardo was 6'-7" 280lbs and I was 5'-10.5" 180lbs at the time. They tried to list me in the program as bigger but it was not accurate.
The truth is, I wasn't hurt at all by his knees, my father threw the towel early cause he knew I wasn't prepared for it. Live and learn. I don't have any regrets, since at least I lost to the champion.
To date, (that I know of) I am the only Traditionally trained Hung Gar representative (In other words, NOT cross trained in other martial arts like BJJ) To have competed in the Octagon.
I take all my real world experience and ring experience, and drive it with Passion into my Traditional Hung Gar.
Further more, Since I’m not a famous old Chinese Teacher , I Get tested and challenged when I do seminars and such So I’m always on the front lines, having to be ready to prove my Hung Gar works. Not many people will step up when they get asked.
Biotches like Laukarfei, who hide and then take pop shots at me from anonymity are disgusting to me.
You come at me when you show some balls and stop getting your training from a message board.
