fingertip pushups

Postby Asmo » Sun Jun 01, 2008 3:49 pm

Hello All,

I've recently started to conditioning the fingertips. I cant properly do pushups yet on the tips (pads are OK, but tips is a different story). I need to cut the nails first each time, but the thumbnail still exceeds the fingertip eve when cut extremely short, so I'm pressing the nail inwards if I try to use the tip of the thumb. This normal? I really need to shift the point a bit more towards the pads instead of the tip as it is otherwise sheer impossible.

Anyone here who has this issue? Does it solve eventually (can't really imagine), or is it OK to shift the area a bit towards the pad there?

Any other tips? You use jow before & after?

Right now I'm holding position for 10 seconds on the ground, and doing pushups leaning against a wall as I can't get it done on the ground yet. Any other tips?

Right... Now I know again why I took out the tigerclaw from my iron palm training: it was numbing the fingertips.

I realize conditioned fingertips are a pre, especially with tiger techniques, but if I ever get in the unfortunate position of getting blind for whatever reason it would prevent me from learning braille.

In this age I think I'll pass on this and just continue doing 'normal' finger pushups on the pads instead of the tips.

There's enough left to condition and learn anyway to last me the rest of my life.

I haven't seen anyone training fingertip pushpups in this way, and to be honest I don't see the benefit. If it is numbing your fingers, then that is not a good sign.

I don't see conditioned fingertips as a pre-req for tiger techniques, because the tiger does not poke. Conditioning the tips are not necessary for the gripping and raking techniques, but strong hands/fingers are.. and for these you are not really using the tip since the you are pulling the fingers inward.

If you want to condition for crane or snake techniques, then there are other ways to train the tips of the fingers ...

markt: we also "poke"/dig in with the fu jaau - five fingers to the eyes, one of two of them will hit the targer (eg. maang fu paan laan, gjffk number 36)

Asmo: check out the article below by Wong Kiew Kit sifu, quite comprehensive description of the fu jaau training

http://shaolin-wahnam.tripod.com/shaoli ... ane04.html

anyway, the finger push ups should not be done on the tips of your fingers, but balls of your fingers - a very little different angle, but it changes the whole thing. practice it leaning against the wall for some time, than proceed to holding the position up to 5 minutes on he ground, than start to work on push ups.

there are more exercises for tiger claw - digging in, grabbing, hoding and twisting with different equipment, but as for start, this is good enough. make sure you work on the usage of your tiger claws, otherwise you waste your time on an isolated skill.

A classic article :)

If I see it well from that photograph its how I have done it up to now. I usually do 3 series of 20 "catstretches" each on the fingers with other series in between.

I need to find me proper jars like those shown on the photo to extend the training.

I just never used concoctions like the ones shown in the article. Just the regular liniments associated with CMA. We do eat good healthy varied food of course. With a wafel now and then ;)

Asmo,

These are the kings of dit daa. Sure you'll find variations with every family and style but within that 80-90% of the ingredients will be the same and in almost 100% of the formulas you'll find these ingredients. Dit daa can go deep but it's not as mystical as some people like to make it out to be.
