Hung Gar typical kick

Postby daoust » Mon Jan 14, 2013 4:01 am

Hi everybody ,

I m looking about Hung Gar typical kick with the english name , the reference ( in wich form you find them ) and how many we have in Hung Gar.
I know we have

flip kick = kicking the keg ref : tiger and crane form . . .
( in ready position , lift the front or back knee to the front and kick with the top part of the foot )

front kick = ?
( in ready pisition , lift the front or back knee to the front and hit the target with the heel or the ball of the foot wile chambering the body backward or tilting the hips )

side kick = tiger s tail kick ref: gung gee fook fu form . . .
( in read position , lift your front knee or back knee to your side facing the target and as you chamber sideway , hyperextend your leg . Hit the target with the knife of the foot or the heel.)

ground side kick = tiger s tail kick ref: . . .
( laying on the floor on your side , do a side kick with both hand on the floor )

Spinning back heel kick with hand on the ground = tiger s tail kick ref: kung gee fook fu form . . . I m not shure that I have seen one video of kung gee fuk fu doing it but I do it after the two elbow strike before the second parts
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfZdHnyIH28

inside cressent kick = ?
( in ready position draw a cressent to the inside with the back or the front leg . hit the target with the instep of the foot.)

outside cressent kick = ?
"in ready position draw a cressent to the outside with the back or the front leg. hit the target with the blade of the foo)

low axe kick = ?
( in ready position. lift your leg up a litle bit at the side of the target and hit with a down motion with the heel of the foot)

kicking with your palm hidding = shadow less kick ref: tiger and crane form . . .
(any kick that you can do with your palm hidding your kick)

roundhouse kick = ?
(in ready position with the front knee or the back knee, lift the knee at the target level and then turn your hip to make your hip face the target while you hit the target with the top of the foot)
( in ready position with the back leg : lift the knee while turning the hip to the target and kick with the top of the foot)

tornado kick= ? ref: double daggers form . . .
(inside cressent kick wile doing a 360 degres in the air )

jump flip kick= single leg , flying crane ref: five animals , five elements form . . .
( jump with a knee in front of you and then bring the back knee in front and execute a flip kick)

low side kick with the back leg or front leg with the instep facing up = ? ref: lau gar fist form . . .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k02F2iH8G44 at 0:30

p.s. a Hung Gar , the kick should not be executed higher then your chest so under your shoulder . For a higher kick , you can jump .

I know , there is more kicking then this and some of them don t have a reference form( taolu ) if you can help me to bring them together , it will be a great help and don t be shy to give your negative or positive opinion about what I have write here.

If you were to talk explicitly about the kicks in HG that appear as part of the modern Orthodox sets...your list of kicks would be smaller than the one you have listed.

The 3 most common kicks seen from forms are going to be some sort of front kick variant (usually a front snap toe kick), the side kick and mabe the shovel or chicken kicking. Kick sweep is different than those.

HG is still Shaolin based. Meaning many of the kicks rise up from the floor in a fluid motion.
So you don't really get the Characteristic chambering of the Hips or planted foot spin rotations that you would see in a style like Taekwondo for example. If you look at how they chamber before a side kick, that's a perfect example.

The standing tigers tail kick typically done in Gung Gee is done differently by some HG schools. Some seem to have even adopted the Chambering hip similar to TKD but I didn't learn it that way. The kick is more of a black movement when you bridge 1st and then it rises from the floor. Targets from low to high start from the knee to thigh to hip to ribs and up under the armpit.

The thing is... body harmony. To do that kick your planted foot needs to step out, this inturn opens the hip and THEN your foot rises for the kick. You should NOT pivot on the ball of the foot like you see in other styles. Stepping properly is especially important.

I bring that up because if a person understands this as a HG basic, they will understand the kicks as well.

I cannot comment on a more modern adaptation like the Tornado kick...I don't see that as my "Bread and Butter". But I would only use it myself as a finish move.

Inside crescent kick like you see in Moi Fah kyun is IMO not from the most original HG...again newer. Basically it's better to set the guy up for this one....than to do it from far away.

There is no round kick in HG that comes from the sets themselves really...at least not in the sense that you'd see a Muay Thai round kick. Again more of a modern adaptation if done this way.

To me, HG strength is not so much kicking with legs as it is bridging then attacking with legs.

HG kicking san shou drills and how HG deals with people who kick on them...OH that is another story. HG is excellent at catching and grappling someone who kicks. These are my favorite.

Thank you for your good contribution Subitai!

You explain a lot my question about the kick in Hung Gar . A lot of the kick I have name , is some kick I practice in my school . The way I learn Hung Gar is that you find everything in the form or at least the concept is there so that why I wanted some reference in form .

I did not say a spinning kick but a "spinning back heel kick" Yes a spinning kick is something different then the way Chui Chi Ling do it , but if he kick with the other leg when he turn is back and if he put is hand on the ground this will be like I do and yes I know it is a tiger tail kick. I did not find realy a good video that show the kick like I do so sorry for misleading you ! I hope you understand better !

Hello Daoust,

The HG foundation was not originally developed with much kicking in mind. Most kicks you'll see are later adaptations, some not so practical...

My advice to you then, is to concentrate on just how kicks support your HG footwork and bridging technique, in securing any tactical objectives: If percentages are with me while both feet are on the ground
(and facing the opponent), why would I want to risk that on a stunt?

:D

Best,

Michael
