Jow Ga Fu Hok Sueng Ying Kuen

I recently had the chance to compare my Jow Ga FHSYK with a Lam-family lineage FHSYK. I was struck by the differences. Which leads me to ask, why are they so different?

FHSYK, as a i understand it, was WFH's form. I presume that my Jow Ga lineage inherited it directly from WFH...I should be clear here. I have no evidence that Jow BIu Si-Jo received WFH forms, but I am presuming that for the following reasons. (1) we have a FHSYK, (2) Jow Biu Si-Jo knew WFH, and (3) there would have been some sharing going on. (I presume this as I have heard that the Hung Ga influence in Jow Ga was changed to match the WFH-style Hung Ga).

BUT, this does not add up. This does not explain why our FHSYK is so different?

Insights? History Lessons? Anything!?

i have seen a Jau Ga FHSYK in China, and it was very close to our FHSYK. well, i am not a Jau Ga expert, so i will wait for the Jau Ga brothers to reveal more!

First of all, if not even any two Hung Kyun lineages are the same, how is a whole 'nother style's take on the FHSYK going to be the same as that of Lam's, or any other lineage Hung Kyun branch?

Secondly, it might help this conversation to post some video for comparison purposes.

Hi Walter, my friends Daifong and PM said it best and I agree with them.

If you learned FHSY in the U.S. stemming from the Dean Chin or Washington D.C. Jow Ga lineage, you most like learned a version taught in the D.C. school that actually came from a friend of Sifu Chin named Tony in the D.C. chinatown, who was a hung ga practitioner. The way it was played by the first generation in Dean Chin’s school is much different than what I see in a more current generation from that origin.

It’s true that our 1st generation of Jow Ga did adopt the FHSY from Wong Fei Hung and the dbl steel whip from a direct student of WFH. WFH and especially his wife were very fond of Jow Biu and of course Jow Lung (Jow Ming Lam - original name). WFH’s wife treated Jow Biu like a son.

Last summer I showed Sifu Sharif Bey a video tape of one our very Jow Ga elders playing the version of FHSY in China, which had been adopted through Wong Fei Hung. Sharif and sat down in restaurant during the Kuoshu tournament where I showed it to him on my laptop and he said that version was just as consistent as other Hung Ga school even when you consider the variations in Hung Ga schools .

Walter are you a student of Master Hoy Lee? If so the version from Dean Chin’s friend would probably apply to your version.

Out of respect to the Jow Ga Sifu performing the FHSY I can’t post it. My FHSY comes from Dean Chin and I don’t play it well enough to speak on it and quite frankly my FHSY is lousy

Maybe I can get Sharif on here to comment on the video I showed him of the jow ga version?

If I can find out a way to privately show PM and Daifong the video I’ll be glad to it and maybe they would be kind enough comment on the elements. I know that there were some points that interested Sharif.

Hello Everyone,

Yes, my brother Derek "tailik" Johnson showed me a video of the Jow Ga FHSYK, and upon reviewing it, IMO, it is identical in structure, content and in many respects, flavor, as the majority of Hung Ga lines tracing themselves through Wong Fei Hung. Derek told me prior to watching the video that they're 1st generation received FHSYK from Wong Fei Hung. Being well aware of the "legendary histories" prevalent in virtually every martial system, it was refreshing to view the Jow Ga version of the form and be able to agree with their history of how they received the form, simply from reviewing their performance of it. In a subsequent conversation we both remarked on how, for the experienced practitioner, our forms, techniques, etc., can be looked at as living family trees, giving us the ability to not only look into the past, but also see where, when and to whom the branches connect. Derek called it "martial forensics."
