hello to all,

i have been currently reading an article by Catharine Despeux, "Six Healing Breaths", in: Livia Kohn (ed.), Daoist Body Cultivation, Three Pine Press, 2006, p. 37-67. it is about famous daoist breathing exercise using 6 sounds (like xi, he, hu, xu, chui, xi - Mandarin pronounciation) and its corelations to TCM and Daoism.

she also writes (quoting some other authors) that: "modern adepts provide more scientific, medical easons for the effectivness of the breaths, noting that they require a different positioning of the lips, tongue, teeth, throat, chest, and abdomen in each case and thus each have a different impact on the inner organs".

same topic form a different point of view, ehm, do not laugh, ok? :-) having a cat, i was always wondering why do the cats purr. i have searched the web and found some really interesting articles.

"All the cats had purr frequencies between 20 Hz and 200 Hz. With the exception of the cheetah, which had frequencies ± 2 Hz from the rest, all the species had frequencies, notably 25 Hz, 50 Hz, 100 Hz, 125 Hz, and 150 Hz, that correspond exactly with the best frequencies determined by the most recent research for bone growth, fracture healing, pain relief, relief of breathlessness, and inflammation. All of the cats' purrs, including the cheetah, had frequencies ±4 Hz from the entire repertoire of low frequencies known to be therapeutic for all of the ailments.

That fact that the cats in this study produced frequencies that have been proven to improve healing time, strength and mobility could explain the purr's natural selection. After a day or night of hunting, purring could be likened to an internal vibrational therapeutic system, a sort of "kitty massage" that would keep muscles and ligaments in prime condition and less prone to injury. Additionally, the purr could strengthen bone, and prevent osteodiseases. Following injury, the purr vibrations would help heal the wound or bone associated with the injury, reduce swelling, and provide a measure of pain relief during the healing process."

interesting, isn't it?

You might also want to know, cats normally purr when they feel well. But if they feel uneasy/threatened they can also purr, to help them feel comfortable again.
Emotion training is also part of the 5 element theory and dragon section of Ng/Sap Ying Kuen.

I see parallels, you?

Now something I have been wondering about, still in the same line. You know I'm not up to the internal sets in Hung Kuen yet, but I have been wondering about this and very curious what you think of it:

From time to time on MA forums the discussions of sounds and their function is brought up. Several participants tell you to place hands on your throath, chest, abdomen, etc. and start a high pitch sound and slowly make it lower and lower. You feel the vibration in your body lower and lower as you lower the pitch of your voice.
Interestingly, I observed the emotional sounds you make by nature seem to vibrate the organ that is also linked to that emotion by the 5 element theory. Knowing this, and knowing what sound you make with which element and the organ it is related to, would you agree that finding the correct sound/pitch can be achieved by placing a hand on the location of the organ and feel the vibration coming while lowering and upping the pitch of the sound?

This way, you feel the organ in question being 'massaged' by the vibrations. Makes sense to me.

It has to be related to each other.

I know the forms include many other intricacies like correct breathing, focusing on different body parts, etc. but above just have been my personal thought on sounds and where they should vibrate/massage the organs and the 5 element theory.

I'd love to get some feedback on my thoughts.

Hey PM and all others. I have been away for a while working at a kids summer camp in the Swiss alps for the summer. I was sooo busy there working 16 hour days I found very little time to practice or be on the forum. But I am back to real life now and will be moving to HK tuesday to work as an English teacher and to begin studying Hung Gar again. I can't wait! Great to be back on the forum as well so greetings to everyone once more!!!

Anyhow, back to the topic at hand. I also practice yoga and have spent some time at yoga retreats and ashrams. While there, I regurarly attended Satsang, which is essentially a time for group meditation, chanting and prayer every morning and night. It was a very profound experience for me, not only because I am very into music, but the energy generated by 50 people all chanting and playing instruments and repeating a basic phrase in Sanskrit is amazing.

One of the yogi's explained to me that sanskrit is uses very basic sounds or syllables, which stimulate energy and the different chakra's or energy centres inside our bodies. Although I know very little about this, I found this idea quite interesting as I had in a way lived it out through my own experience. Satsang can be a very moving an sometimes even a healing experience for many people.

This idea seems very similar to what PM is talking about in his post. It is pretty interesting stuff, especially given the overlap between daoism, yoga (vedanta) and scientific theories on animals!!
