hello guys,

question about your "Iron Gate Bolting, Thousand Pounds Pressing Down" (Tit Mun [Saan] Chin Gan Jeui)

Image

how do you do it? how do you use it? how do you use it as part of an attacking combo? do you "Sink"/Press Down" before or after the "Iron Gate Bolting"? how about this one in gjffk/fhsy and sap ying kyun (leopard - gwa sau, tit mun saan) or gjffk deui chaak (gwa sau, seung gwa cheui, tit mun saan)

Feel free to giggle if one thinks Im wrong or "doing it wrong"... but in the form "I shaped subduing the tiger" its preceded by a bridge arm correct? Me personally, I use pieces of the forms as "combos" and this is actually one I like and would use in combat. So here's my take on it and how I practice it as a drill:
(sorry my chinese is worse than... well lets just say it really bad; so I rarely use it in public, I hope my westernized naming can be understood)

I would use the bridge arm to contact a forearm or lower leg of my opponent while in HORSE STANCE then twist into it, "bolting the door" in TOE STANCE (if this didnt throw my opponent or knock them down.. continue) and then sinking from toe to BOW STANCE while pressing into my opponent forcing them back as well as striking the center line chest and chin in a uppercut type strike to end in a position just as the Illustration shows.

How many martial Artist does it take t screw in a light bulb?
5 ... 1 to play the bulb screwing form... and 4 to say "Hey we have that in our system, we just call it something else!"

In my opinion, there aren't many true "attacking combos" in Hung Kuen.. the strategy is primarily counter-striking or defend and attack.. or attack while avoiding ...:)

For me this is about escaping from a clinch or grab where your opponent is going to try to attack you with his lower body.. Protect yourself by creating a bit of space with your posture/stance, move your hips and use your forearms to protect your body from knees or your groin from a close kick. If you time it right, and you are very close, you could drop the elbow on the opponents thigh. Otherwise, you are using your forearms - the structure of the arms and sinking properly is important here for this to work. Once you have a bit of space, then counter however you like.. the "uppercut" is one option.

If you can't hit hard, hit them where they're soft.

I teach this as one of our Bik Kiu -pressing (or crashing) bridges.(others include crane's comb, gwa choy/ping choy, diagonal forearm strike/pak sau, seung gung fook fu, sup ji sau, etc)
It offers great coverage while you jam into your opponent's bridge and strike simultaneously.-, and opens the upper gate for lien wan choy.
Defensively against a kick by dropping the body down, using short power and utilizing the forearms and elbows to strike into the shin/instep/nerves of the leg. When using short power, your arms are able to spring back into position and foward into yuor opponent as well.

markt: makes sense, thx sir! anyway, attacking (pro-active "self-defense") is usually much easier that counter striking. that is why in our self-defense scenarios (i am not talking about sparring) we most of the time work on preemptive striking (= attacking).

to the topic:

short bridge usage is pretty clear, worsk as magic; what is on my mind is using the technique along with other techniques (set up), as a fierce series of strikes

Grandmaster Ho Laptin has an interesting combo in his Lau sing kyun - basically front gwa cheui, rear sau cheui (Immortal Descending the World), turned into "Technique of Iron Gate-Bar" (for those who have the book, number 5 and 6, for those who do not, get it, imho one of the best Hung Kyun books out there)

similar to our leopard atacking combo i have mentioned above, chaap - gwa sau- seung gwa, tit mun saan cheui. 3 strikes form the top down, that sounds to me as a thousand pounds crushing!

as a short bridge combo - what set up would you use, if used as an offensive move?

From my experience, it would be a double hand punch. Sifu Kiew Wong Kit describes it as a "wave punch".

I've seen it used in tandom with "Lohan beats the drum" Where the user would block straight downward with the back of the fist in a side bow-arrow/ lunge stance or cat stance; then step inward and deliver this as a double punch moving in and up to chin and solar plexus.

Hope that helps.
