Hung Gar, Toy Gar, Fut Gar Styles ?

Postby HungGarGuy » Wed Jan 26, 2011 6:47 am

Hello, this is my 1st post, I'm new to the forum.
What type of Hung Gar do I practice?
My lineage is through Buffalo Ny, tho my Teacher isn't Shifu Norman, my Shigung is GM TFW.
Image
I'm told that our style of Hung Gar comes from the Temple in the Village of Toyson. What type of Hung Gar would that make it,
Village, or Temple Style?

Then after that fact all 3 styles where combined or hybridized by my Shigung Wong, Ting Fong.

My style turns out looking like Hung Fut or GM Ark Y. Wong's Style, it doesn't really look like GM Wong Fei Hung's Lineage style. If you guys could help me it'd be good info. to know. Thanks (bow).

Now that's an example of a proper lineage chart, ok!

I believe somebody on another thread just recently clarified the question of Toy Gar origin, explaining it as a dialectic variation on Choy Ga Kyun, a (relatively) well-known southern system...

Well, on the HG side (thanks to your chart) it is possible at least to help (so far as to say), that according to our history, it has not been an actual "temple" art since the times of Ji Sin Sim Si and his Yap Sat Mun To Dai, Hung Hei Goon...

To my understanding, "village" art was what a style was referred to when a practitioner or a school claimed no particular lineage other than some local family line, obscuring somewhat short of including any famous personages or temples as their founding source...

In this case, as you trace to Hung Hei Goon and Ji Sin Sim Si, your system should most likely share in common with their "temple" art, and likewise with as many other branches of theirs as are locatable...

Hung Fut apparently does indeed claim lineage to Hung Hei Goon, but to my knowledge, aside from that, any other claims to Hung Hei Goon remain (as yet) unsubstantiated (here, please keep in mind that there yet remain a great many things that I don't know about, lol)...

Anyway, "a picture is worth a thousand words", toward explanation, and I'm sure that everyone would be interested to know more about your branch as well. Perhaps you'd post a clip or two of barehand footage that you feel are most defining of your system, and/ or open some discussion of your school's foundational theory?

:D

Michael

What it looks like

Postby HungGarGuy » Mon Jan 31, 2011 2:09 pm

This will give you an idea of my style.
Tho this is GM Lam Sai Wing these pics are all moves I practice.
Some movements are found in both Hung Gar and Fut Gar.
Image
Except my style doesn't practice this salute.

This image has a lil bit more a Fut Gar flavor.

I call this move a Toy Gar move.

Basically my Style is obscure do to its hybridization,
Hung Gar, Toy (Choy) Gar, Fut Gar.

My only clue.

I also had the honer of meeting Shifu Calvin Chin. I asked him, what sort of Hung Gar is this? He said, "well I can see the Fut Gar influence, but it looks mostly like some sort of village type of Hung Gar."
P.S. Shifu Calvin Chin taught me some Dragon @ a seminar/tournament in 2005, I was humbled.

www.mandarinkungfu.com is a great school, still in the area where my GM taught. If I where to break down the 3 arts in order, it would be Hung(Foundation)Toy(Intermediate)Fut(Advanced).

Well, thank you for sharing...we value most of those things as well, and I'm sure that everyone here is interested in authentic, lineage Hung Hei Gun Hung Kyun, and associated systems!

Anyway, other than the Hung Fut that I mentioned, there are actually a couple of schools in China who believe their lineage traces back through Hung Hei Gun. Rather inconclusively, I feel, for the main reason that everything they show is quite consistent with the Lam Sai Wing/ Dung Fong/ Leung Wing Hang foundation as passed down through Wong Fei Hung, as well as some elements of Choy Li Fut and contemporary Wushu Nanchuan...

There are also several schools of Choy Ga, and Fut Ga Kyun as well. Most of these have been hybridized in modern generations, and some have been quite recently established...

Does your school maintain contact with any of the lineage sources that you mention?

:D

Best,

Michael
