Here's to cheating, stealing, fighting, and drinking.
If you cheat, may you cheat death.
If you steal, may you steal a woman's heart.
If you fight, may you fight for a brother.
And if you drink, may you drink with me.

Hung Gar Curriculum

Postby ginosifu » Fri Sep 11, 2009 4:24 pm

Just wanted some more input on Hung Curriculums by the teachers here. What do you think of this type of curriculum:

Every level should contain these aspects:

System Theorys / Maxums / Statements

Form / Form Drills / Form Applications

Kicks: Level appropriate

Skill Based Drills / Line Drills

Fighting Drills / Sparring Drills / Timing Drills / Reaction Drills

Street Self Defense Techniques

Chin Na / Grabbing Techniques / Pressure Points

Shuai Chiao Throws / 1 or 2 per level

Tumbling / Breakfalls

Strength and Conditioning Requirements

Chi Gung / Qi Gong exercises

What do you guys think

First-excellent curriculum. I am in agreement with this. I teach falling and takedowns day one as well as contact conditioning. The student needs to feel contact and develop the mindset.

Second-here's my question" how do you differentiate between App,lications from the forms and the following:?

Skill Based Drills / Line Drills

Fighting Drills / Sparring Drills / Timing Drills / Reaction Drills

Street Self Defense Techniques

Chin Na / Grabbing Techniques / Pressure Points

Shuai Chiao Throws / 1 or 2 per level

when I teach these, I make sure that they are drawn directly from the forms they are working on, so one reinforces the other, and they use what they are learning.

For those who add additional skills to the curriculum - do you also give the students the history of where those came from and give them a clear knowledge of what is traditionally Hung Kuen vs 'new stuff', whether boxing, shuai jiao, jujitsu, etc.. ?

The reason I am interested in this question is that I think it could potentially make communication more difficult between families if the idea of Hung style becomes more and more different in future generations..

Just to be clear, I'm all for learning other skills and believe that each person needs to make their gung fu fit their own needs - my sifu has done a little bit of boxing, judo, buddhist+ taoist qi gong, yi ji chan, etc, as well as picked up other CMA from students of some of Chan Hon Chung's friends from other style.. but I feel it is very important to know where the skills are coming from (my opinion anyway)..

Hung Gar Curriculum

Postby ginosifu » Fri Sep 11, 2009 8:25 pm

TT,
I give my students traditional form apps that mt teacher gave me. I also give them different apps that I pulled from the form myself. Hopefully this will give them freedom to create different combos using theory from that form or system. When testing for their sash they must put together apps that make sense using 3-5 techniques in a combo.

For those other parts of the curriculum;

Skill Based Drills / Line Drills:
These are normally basic drills that teach footwork / Coodinating hand and foot techniques. Teaching basic blocks, strikes and kicks. Some are in combos and some are just single movements. Some have apps but mostly getting the person to move and chew gum at the same time.

Fighting Drills / Sparring Drills / Timing Drills / Reaction Drills
There are some fighting drills that come from the forms but there are also fighting drills that are separate from the forms but are taught along side them. Some drills are geared to help with timing and not necesarily from the forms. Also there is a difference in how people "Fight" and how they "Spar". This is a difficult task to meld the form / fighting flavor with the way that students want to spar. If you look at how most average students spars, you would not know if they were practicing northern Shaolin or Southern Shaolin or Monkey style.

Street Self Defense Techniques
Street self defense is just taking the theories I have learned and putting them into situations that might happen today. By using Hung Techniques we can devise a plan to stop someone who tryies to Choke you (for example a double handed forward front choke) or if someone tries to rush and tackle you. We dont take from other styles but modify Hung techniques to meet the needs of the situation.

Chin Na / Grabbing Techniques / Pressure Points
Chin Na or Kum Na is the style of grabbing / Locking / Controlling. The basic Chin Na techniques are hidden but can be found thruought all of the forms. However, some stuff is just not from the forms and is handed down from the teacher, usually to disciples or Sihings and higher ranks.

Shuai Chiao Throws / 1 or 2 per level
Shaui Chiao / Syeut Gok is throwing. Even though there are throws found in all the forms, I usually start with basic throws for beginners whether they are found in the forms or not. Once the basic throws are mastered then move onto more advanced for each level. I still make the student find throws in each form.

Markt:
Even though I have learned Different styles, if I an teaching Hung gar, all techniques come from Hung Gar. One thing I learned from Wing Lam Sifu is that all styles of Chinese kung fu have these 4 components in every form / technique or style:
Striking
Kicking
Chin Na
Throw
All of the stuff that I teach in my class was given to by my teacher and to my best knowledge it is all Hung Kuen

Subitai,

If you honestly want to get together in a friendly meeting, then let me offer an invitation for you to come out here instead and meet the people I work out with. It will be totally different in philosophy than your full-contact, street fighting experience. We're on a different path in Hung Gar at this point in our lives than you. So if you want to pass judgement on it, fine. But if you are open-minded maybe there is some knowledge we can share between us. We can still drink tea and even have something to eat afterwards as we always do after class. I'll send you a pm after this is posted.
