Greetings people. Haven't been as active on the forum lately since moving back to Gothenburg. Since I had to leave my fav students behind in USA, I've been working on my Kung Gee, and also started training with my brother in law. He's done about 1.5 years of Muai Thai, or the Swedish version of it. Since he was interested in learning about the chinese systems, of course I am more than willing to teach and explain what little misunderstood info I have.
Instead of rushing headlong through x amount of forms we've only gone through lessons 1 to 6 of Kung Gee (Wing Lam dvd lessons, or Lam Sai Wing pdf fig. 39.) We are working the fundamental principles and ideas found so far, stances, structure and legjams w/stances, the Pak Sau (bouncing/slapping hand,) Lop Sau (grabbing/pulling) hand, and the concept of the hand that doesn't return empty. I want to work these principles and ideas to the bone before going further in the Kung Gee, as I feel that lesson 7 and onward are compounded or combined techniques/principles learned in lessons 1 through 6.
Through the years of getting my ass beat in training, competitions and minor scuffles I have realized that it will probably be easier to add some ideas from Hung Gar to Fredrik's (brother-in-law) Muai Thai and slowly add/change tactics instead of just dropping everything he has learned and start from scratch. Otherwise when its hammertime he might have a software conflict shutdown and not be able to push the advantage of either. That's just my hypothesis, but after having trained TKD, Shaolin, and Judo for a number of years, one does notice conflicting ideas. Too close for kicks, too far for punches, which way do I go?
Anyway, I will notify you on progress as usual now that things have stabilized somewhat.
Cheers!
V.
