Chunyats’ question about teaching got me thinking about asking a question.
The real question is where are WE as teachers trying to lead our students???
Or what is the goal of "Your" or "Our" teaching?
* Some schools pump out instructors in order to start MORE schools.
* Because you enjoy it? ...but that can't be the only reason, there must be a conclusion or goal.
For me it’s multiple reasons:
1) Yes, I do enjoy it
2) It keeps me motivated to better myself. If I don’t hold back and give my students everything…when they get good, they challenge my skill to get better. Then I have NO CHOICE but to improve.
3) I'm always trying to become more enlightend...especially when it comes to REALLY being able to fight with our Kung fu in a Modern Sense. By that I mean nobody walks up to you and says "I want to fight" and does a traditional reverse punch.
So a goal or reason to teach would be to attempt to lead my students to the same place as me...to use Hung Gar as a vehicle to become free and follow whatever your opponant does.
*** Lastly I do rely on it as part of how I make my living.

I love to teach. Probably a calling of some sort. In my youth I taught a guy with 10 thumbs to play guitar, for instance. And I love martial arts. Currently I am teaching two students what little I know from years of various martial arts, and we are learning Hung Gar together..
Apart from the love of teaching pretty much anything from woodburning, guitar, and martial arts to anyone willing to learn.
With the lack of good schools around here, I am pretty much training the boys so I can train with them and thus increase my own skills. For example, in order to train my defensive skills against various kicks, I have to teach the boys how to kick, and also learn and study them and try to impart my knowledge in a way they can understand.
Teaching others also inspire me to grow myself, to look at things from different perspectives. As they get good enough to spar with, I also get live fire pressure testing of techniques so I can adjust and modify them instead of just doing static drills and thinking I've got it down proper.
In some ways I am the guy I wish I'd met twenty years ago, my own Mr. Miyagi.

why do I teach ?
In my time between living in HK and the Philippines I taught for a couple of months in Germany,already there I felt teaching is the best way to refine your gung fu...when I moved to the Philippines I never planned to teach there but then I was invited to teach at a chinese wushu association..that was nearly 3 years ago and since then I never stopped teaching...in the next 2 years I will go back to Germany but I will leave a new generation of hung kuen player here in Manila and its the only hung kuen school in the whole of Philippines..I have 3-4 potential students that will take over here...
I teach because I believe in Hung Kuen and believe there still people that are not too lazy to learn it and then eventually carry on..I teach hung kuen because I dont want it to die out,I want it to survive all the instant martial arts,all the fashion MA events and trends... hung kuen is a timeless martial art because it lives now,its not something from 300 years ago like an antique porcelan vase ..its something thats now always evolving,breathing,growing but only if we let it... and I see enough people that share the same idea (thank heaven!)...
lastly its an neverending task,never stop learning,never stop discovering
and all this is what I wanna teach and share
I have been given something for life and how great is it to give something for life !

Why I teach:
1) To preserve and honor my Sifu's who taught me this great Style of Hung
Ga. If you keep it hidden you will never get a chance to spread the art.
2) To enhance my own Hung Ga as mentioned by others here when teaching
you do see what will work and what will hurt you in a situation.
3) To educate other martial artist that Hung ga is not a useless, archaic
style in these present times.
