Chan Hon Chung: a family statement

Postby RedMamba » Sat Nov 05, 2011 8:39 pm

After recent idle, and ignorant, chatter on the internet about the life of Master Chan Hon Chung, one of his family students, James Uglow, travelled from London to Hong Kong for discussions with his teacher's family in October 2011. For the sake of historical accuracy, and to protect Chan Sifu's legacy from those who would use his name for personal gain, Mr Uglow has been asked to clarify a number of points about the master's life. It is stressed that this is the full story, as sanctioned by Chan Sifu's family.

Chan Sifu died in 1991 after a short illness. In his last three weeks, he suffered from a stomach condition, but otherwise remained healthy despite his advanced age. Chan Sifu was still teaching select students, including Mr Uglow, up to three weeks before he died, demonstrating both the physical and mental agility for which he was renowned. Apart from his kung fu, he also treated patients in his clinic until he died, even leaving his sick bed in his final days to do so. It is clear from this that Chan Sifu remained strong and fiercely passionate about all he did right until the end.

Chan Sifu has left a lasting legacy of Hung Gar treasure to the world, through his most valued and dedicated students. While there are a number of these teaching the system today — generally characterised by the quality of getting on with the training rather than indulging in cheap talk and personal aggrandisement — it is noted for the record that his only follower, in the traditional sense, was Kong Pui Wai.

A full statement is being prepared now with the family.

I second what red mamba has written-popsjnr is very happy with what is there also. As a longtime very poor student of Jim Uglow, I know it wasnt an easy decision to bring this matter-all the lies and deceit written by a former "student"-to the attention of the family in HK, but it had to happen, si-gung's son had to be informed of the defamation of his father's memory.

What was written by that former "student" was disgusting and nothing short of an act of treachery..

I am not a student of Mr James Uglow, nor am I practitioner of southern style CMa, I have however known Mr Uglow for many years in martial friendship.

Knowing Mr Uglow well, and his position with his kung fu family, he has been put in an impossible position that he cannot pass by and has to respond accordingly, not only by his kung fu families code of ethics, but also following chinese martial arts protocol. More and more westerners seem to be unable to grasp the much deeper essence of not only CMA but the essence of their teachers and masters, perhaps that is because they only wear the cloth of martial arts system, but do not have it in thier bone marrow

Mr Uglow however has a very deep grasp of his families teachings' having received full transmission by Chan Hon Chung, when I personally first started receiving transmission from my kung fu family. Mr Uglow who was kind enough to offer me some guidance and help in understanding what was happening, laughed and said ah welcome to my world, another one of the few I know who will share the difficulties of receiving transmission from your ancestors, as it permeates your very being

Re the content by the orginal poster concerning the Late Chan Hon Chung.

1st In Chinese culture to publicly imply a person has lost not only thier mental faculties, ability etc is an insult beyond comprehension, to do so concering your teacher is beyond me no matter the issue, a person, family member or student simply would not publicly ever state that even if it were true.

2nd I was in Hong Kong some 4 weeks after the passing of Chan Hong Chung, I met with his Son (EdwardChan) at the HKCMAA HQ, I was not aware of chan hong chung's passing, as when I had spoken to people in HKG 9 weeks before travelling to hong kong, Chan Hon Chung was alive and well, with no health issue's.

Chan Hon Chung was a pillar of the martial arts community, famed for not only his Hung Gar, Dit Dar and his Wa Fu spiritual healing abilities but for being probably one of the most important founding figures in uniting all schools of CMA under one banner of unity and friendship within the HKCMAA.

It saddens me greatly to such a terrible comments regarding late Master Chan

Hi Cheesedip

sorry you are mistaken about my identity...

popsjnr HUNG himself shortly after he was banned from this forum....he was devastated over being banned.....simply for trying to defend his si-gungs name, and so missed the friendly interaction from fellow Hung Gar stylist who like to shout down anyone who disagrees with them, that he had to end it all...I found his body....he was my twin brother you see.

Kong Pui Wai si-baak being informed

Postby santaranks » Wed Nov 23, 2011 7:22 pm

My teacher Jim Uglow is flying to Hong Kong today to inform the holder of the Chan Hon Chung lineage (Sau To), and current Chairman of the H.K.C.M.A.A--Kong Pui Wai si-baak--of the statements made by mr Biraghi, ref:Chan si-gung's mental health.

Chan si-gung's son, Edward is already aware, and, hopefully once Kong si-baak is informed a resolution will be forthcoming. It is not too late for these damaging allegations, vehemently refuted by all Chan si-gung's students, of his post-85 mental state to be publicly retracted by the author.
