Hung Kuen Code of Conduct

Postby Bamboo » Tue Nov 23, 2010 6:50 am

Hi all,

Does you kwoon have a Hung Kuen Code of Conduct passed down through your lineage? If so, what are the rules? If not, would you consider making one up for your kwoon?

For example, Sifu Wing Lam states in his book, Southern Shaolin Kung Fu Ling Nam Hung Gar, page 20: "Faced with students from diverse social backgrounds, Hung Gar masters of previous generations created the following set of rules for good martial conduct:

1. Respect your teacher and the art.
2. Train hard and appreciate the knowledge being passed to you.
3. Do not trick, cheat, or harm others. Always present yourself in an orderly fashion.
4. Do not swing your fist in front of, or insult, your elders or seniors.
5. Do not laugh aloud without reason. Do not fabricate stories and do not cause problems.
6. Do not pick on the young or the weak. Do not take revenge for personal gain. Do not use your martial arts skills to exact revenge.
7. Do not point at people while talking, and do not talk or act loudly.
8. Do not sit in an impolite manner. Do not swear.
9. Do not spread rumors or talk behind anyone's back. Do not harass the weak and show favor to the strong.
10. Do not be greedy or steal from others.
11. Talk softly, but do not be afraid to ask questions.
12. Control yourself and be agreeable to the majority. Help people and do good things."

Thanks for your valuable input.

It's funny you mention this, today for the first time I saw my master get angry at a student because he was "trying some moves" while he was speaking. (Moves that were not related to what he was showing) .

I think the respect in any kung fu school is very important. A place where the teacher has power over his students. Those lines of conducts seem very good to me.

I think my school has great values and most of them you have them named. Not any written rules from what I know, but peolpe just know how to act from the speeches the teacher makes.

Code of Ethics

Postby HungGarAZ » Tue Dec 21, 2010 7:28 pm

Hello brothers,

Here's a similar Americanized code that I've seen used by several schools:

1 - Follow the rules; strive for self discipline and respect in the martial arts.
2 - Be honest and fair; show love for your country and respect for your parents.
3 - Know your fellow students; befriend them and unite with them.
4 - Be disciplined; control your desires and keep up your good spirits.
5 - Practice faithfully; do not lose the martial arts.
6 - Be patient with others; show calmness and avoid unnecessary fighting.
7 - Be friendly and courteous toward others.
8 - Use your skill to protect the weak and help the good.
9 - Be humble; never forget from where and from whom you learned the art.
10 - Honor your ancestors and teachers and always keep their teachings.
