What I understood is several fast repetitions which are then repeated. Not martial moves. These people were also interested in body building how I perceive it, its not part of the martial training the way I understood it. As I said above, they also participated in bodybuilding events.
You can have 1+1 of course, it doesn't have to be tied into the martial curriculum.

Weights are not a new thing in gung fu training by the way. Just modern equipment and training looks a little bit different.
People have been training for a long time with the "stone locks"... some styles emphasize this kind of training more than others. But it is not like the bodybuilding way of training.
