I have a friend who started kung fu under one of these schools before coming to me to continue his Hung Gar studies. I was confused... then concerned... then confounded. It seemed he could not perform the forms without reciting the "poetry." He had a good chunk of FHSYK, but no foundation of basics... had never even heard of GGFFK. I told him I would be glad to work with him, but we would start from the beginning. We didn't last long together. He wanted the black belt and managed to get it without any foundation.

I did get a couple of DVDs put together by JC. He starts his forms DVD with Chiu Chi Ling's FHSYK video and then following it up with his forms demonstrations and then wrapping it up with a picture montage of all of his achievements, awards, students, schools.

Sigh...

I guess I was avoiding full names here because I'm not a big fan of just badmouthing individuals for my own entertainment. This forum has been pretty cool on being clear of unnecessary trash-talk. Anyways, Jerry Cook seems to pop up on all sorts of forums when people talk about him.

You can look him up on the YouTube and see all sorts of fun stuff that he spreads... an admitted "collector of forms."

Makes me recall what I was taught (also posted in "maxims" thread)...

My perception is that students like that kind of stuff because they learn a lot of material mixed with mystical-magical "kung fu wisdom" and most focus is placed on advancement, ranks, sashes, certificates, etc... typical American style kids karate classes. Hey... they get good exercise and it's good for morale, right? If they like what they're getting out of it, who am I to say anything?

My teacher studied briefly with Jerry Cook (not in Hung Gar), and says the guy is skilled. I'm not sure what his primary style is or where he gets his perfered body mechanics, but I think you can see from the video that its not from Hung Gar. Its missing the feeling of rooted solidness in my opinion.

I think he moves well and to me it looks like he does alot of northern styles primarily, maybe Longfist is his specialty?

I can tell you that the Chen-Style videos on his Channel are even worse than his Hung Kuen. Terrible...

I'll be honest... that idea sometimes crosses my mind. It is a shame... both that there are charlatans peddling their wares to people AND that you can't go around to show them what's what.
