Grandmaster Frank Yee said in an interview once that there are "3 types of HK..HHG, Village(aka--old??), and Shaolin temple Hung Ga".

I may be misreading it..but if this is so..am I to understand that this may be THE original HG even before HHG? (As in passed from Gee Sin to HHG). If not..can someone please clarify?

Furthermore, does "Shaolin temple HG" have a different syllabus than either Tang Fung or LSW lineages?

Could you post the article? It's a bit hard as I think context might also play an issue in your question.

"Village" is not old hung ga, it is offshoot. When the style made it's way to the small villages it was changed slightly.

He might have meant northern Hung Kyun.

Aka Xiao Hong Quan / Da Hong Quan that they still teach in Shao Lin, which are 2 sets from a a far-older northern Hong Quan style.

I think Mok is right. The Hong meaning Red in that case and not related to Hung Hei Goon

Village Hung Kuen may be older as well. It refers to Hung Kuen that was not passed down through Wong Fei-Hung for the most part, or it may be Hung Kuen that made its way to the villages rather than Fatsan,Guangdong,HK, etc.

I think it's just a generalisation/classification of the types of styles Wong Fei Hung combined. All can be called hung or siulam.

My sigung (Grandmaster Yee), in referring to what he calls the three orthodox Hung Ga (Hung Family) styles of WFH's day, understands that the name Hung Ga, especially during that time, related to a political organization, not a specific martial style per se. Many of the names of various styles were not necessarily descriptive of the style itself, but (as in Tai Chi/'Grand Ultimate') descriptions of the founder's skill level, or (as in Hung Ga) political affiliation.

This is why there exists so much technical difference in what we now know as "non-orthodox" Hung Kuen, or styles from South China that claim connection to Siu Lam and/or Hung Hei Gwun but not through the Wong family line. This would include the so-called "village" styles, more accurately called Hung Ga Jaap.

What GGM Tit Kiu Saam passed down (called by my sigung Siu Lam Hung Kuen), various travelling Hung Mun revolutionaries hired by various villages to train the members (the collection of various techniques from these teachers comprised numerous 'Hung Ga Jaap/mixture' styles), and the old Tiger and Crane techniques passed from Hung Hei Gwun to Luk Ah Choi and inherited by the Wong Family is the trinity of material WFH, through his connections to both the martial and political societies, accessed and used to advance our great style, according to GGM Tang Fong.
