rare hung kuen sets

Hi all,

I wonder what are the less known forms that circulate within the hung kuen families..there are queit a few actually..

we have the ha say fu sets (although they are not really rare since they can be bought on video)

here in Manila there was a hung gar teacher named Lao Kim who taught a very different hung gar..I learned one of the sets and it doesnt resembles too much on hung kuen..my student has this set on his youtube channel and another one by Lao Kim himself..

In my lineage we have many pre wong fei hung sets, suppose to come from Luk Ah Choi, however those sets are not all high stances and narrow bridges..what they dont have is the one finger to heaven posture..its all tiger instead...

I have learned 3 of the hand sets that is
Wun Jing Fook Fu Kuen/tiger changing the shapes fist-混形伏虎拳
Ng Hang Kuen/five element fist - 五行拳 (very different from the 5 elements in sapying kuen)
mang fu chut dung/Fierce Tiger exits its cave - 猛虎出洞

last one i just learned recently..those sets are very hung ,there are more sets like 3 animal fist, arrow fist,lo han fook fu kuen etc. but my sifu doesnt teach them unless u really ask for it...

Im not really a form collector myself I only teach 8 hand sets but when it comes to those old forms I really like them...and they are really brutal, the techniques are simple but effective
whats ur thought on the rare forms and which ones u know....?

We don't have any 'rare' and forms. Although our Lau Ga Kuen is very different from the Lau Ga Kuen I've seen from other lineages. That said I'm not so much on this form and I don't practice it by myself at all. There are really not techniques in it that are not covered elsewhere and it has some odd stepping here and there I don't really like.

Weapon forms is different. I think only the monkey stick form I learned is along the lines what you see in other lineages. For the rest all the forms are very different. Most is in the 'mui fa' line. Which in itself does not say much of course :) Some might have northern roots. I really like our mui fa dao, which I think you've seen before :D

One weapon form that stands out is the dagger form. Aside from some weird (high & full rotation) kicks I really like it, Its very southern but with a twist as its not exactly Hung Kuen. I hope to record it someday and show parts of it. I think daggers are one of the few realistic weapons in modern day. This aside of using weapons for other goals such as enhancing alignments, power generation etc.

My Sifu's curriculum contains Sam Ying Kuen also known as the Snake Cat Crane combination.

PM was kind enough to let me know that the set was created by a LSW student named Leung Winghaang.

It's not going as far back as the pre WFH sets, which I think are really cool. But I think it's rare just for the fact that not many schools play or teach this set.

I like this set because the footwork is straight back and forth. Also as a pre- cursor to GGFFK/FHYSK it introduces some of the hands found later.

Sam Jin Kuen (3 Battle Fist) is almost never taught in non-mainland HG schools.

I've learned a HG Version in Shenzen and a Dog Boxing Version in NYC . Both utilize Palm and Claw hand methods predominantly.

There is also a Fa Kuen (Flower Fist) set also taught in some HG Schools.

Hi ngokfei,

Is Fa Kuen anything like Mui Fa Kuen? And is it a mainland set?

Thanks :)

Probably has similarities.

I've never seen the Fa Kuen set mentioned in the writings read.

Jow Ga and Chi Sim Weng Chun also have Fa Kuen sets as well. But I believe the Jow Ga set is really supposed to be called Mui Fa Kuen.

Luk Ah choy is said to have learned Fa Kuen from Chi Sim so perhaps it is similar to the set in the Chi Sim Weng Chun school.

Hmm we have a Fa Kuen set which is a minor set not really part of the curriculum. I only learned it partly on a seminar, but I can say it is nothing like Chi Sim Weng Chun. Fa Kuen as I learned it is very much Hung Kuen, maybe with a small flavor but far from the way Chi Sim Weng Chun does their stances and power generation (I've done a little Weng Chun, not much, but enough to see the difference).

I practice Lau Gar Jeung, it seems a bit rare.

And Sam Yin Kuen, like the bandit.

Some Hak Fu Kuen, from Fu Jow Pai.

And the very odd Lin Wan Kuen. I was just told it was a sil lum set, but research have led me to http://www.kinmon.org/ where they practice the same set, though it looks more like Tai Chi the way they do it.

None of these are a normal part of our curriculum.

I believe this might also be the style that Leo T. Fong presented in his book, "Sil Lum Kung-Fu."
