Hmmm, I must be doing this set wrong. I am not doing the monkey section. (3:15)

This is a different set than the LSW ng jing ng haang kyun. It contains the same animals of dragon, snake, tiger, panther, and crane but also contains lion, elephant, monkey, horse, and deer. So it is really more of a sap jing kyun than ng jing ng haang, per se. Different lineage, different set. We also have the ng jing ng haang kyun as well which is pretty much the same as most out there.

Hope that helps.

Justin

Thanks for the info! Interesting as from what I learned LSW created this form. Well, he created the original form with the 5 animals and 5 elements.

Interesting (and very long!) set

Yeah, it's a long form. In my understanding the concepts of the other animals are also built into some of our common Hung forms but this is the only set that isolates them. I do not know where Sizou Lai learned this set. We also have a siu lam ng jing kyun as well that focuses on the typical five animals. It's also a long set.

Cool! Someone made up a "Hung Gar Ten Animals" set, out of the Chiu Family's Sap Ying Kyun!

Let's see now, Tiger, Leopard, Snake, Crane, Dragon, Monkey, Horse, Cat, Elephant, and Lion...no, it's Deer, right?

So, are you telling us that Sui Long Pau Kyun/ Water Punch is now the "Elephant"??

:)

Best,

Michael

Really Mike.... nice attitude there. You're normally at least a little less obvious than that.

As for the history of the set, I don't know where it came from beyond Sizou Lai. If you're asking, insinuating, or flat-out saying he made it up from the Chiu/Ziu family sap jing kyun I can't really respond to that because I just don't know. Did Sizou Lai interact with Chiu/Ziu Gaau, yep, but what that interaction was is sadly lost information. Could he have created the set from the Chiu family sap jing kyun, maybe. But looking to the rest of the curriculum I doubt it, especially since we have a standard version of sap jing kyun already.

And as far as the elephant section having some arm shapes that are similar to siu long paau kyun you are obviously correct although it should be pretty clear the body usage and stepping methods are different than those typically associated with siu long paau kyun.

This is EXACTLY how I learned this form back in the early 90's. (well, Sifu skipped one side of the snake section for the demo)

All is good. I was just wondering about the video titled Five animals and five elements fist as the title implied Sup Yin (the original form) and I was wondering how a monkey section got incorporated in it.

JE, thanks for your input. It is cool actually seeing how forms change/mutate thru time and have different flavors within each family.

Cheesedip,

I agree, the evolution of forms and the differences between our respective families is interesting. I would say seeing the differences is the reason we're all here. No need to come here just to see more of the same, right?

Anyhow, the video you posted was uploaded to YouTube by someone outside our family and is titled incorrectly. Within our family the set goes by two names - Siu Lam Sap Jing Kyun/Siu Lam Ten Animals Fist or Gau Sap Jing Kyun/Old Ten Animals Fist. We actually don't call this set Ng Jing Ng Haang Kyun/Five Animals Five Elements Fist.

We also have the standard Ng Jing Ng Haang Kyun that most Hung Kyun schools play. This set will be much like your own and only contains the typical animals/elements. The set in the video is just an entirely different set.

The inclusion of the opening of TSK at the beginning was likely added at some point in time - likely inspired by the Hung Kyun NJNH Kyun. I say this because the Siu Lam Sap Jing Kyun actually has a separate dragon section so if you include the TSK opening then you have dragon showing itself twice which is a bit unusual. Sizou Lai traveled a lot through China as child and where he picked up this set is sadly lost to us.

What an excellent demo by jeff Hasbrouck there, quite different than our family's Sap Ying Kuen but fascinating, what is the history behind this version?? I didnt see any Tiger there, but the Monkey fist looks wicked - always wanted to learn a touch of that. Also, and this is a genuine question, not being disrespectful but why is the salute right hand palm left hand fist instead of the more usual other way round??
