for long range, combine it with raising your knee, creating the 'shield' for high middle and lower gates. Basically used as na emergancy defense against a roundhouse kick,easily followed with a stomp, or kick of your own, or other closing and striking methods.
You will only be limited by your own personal limitations.

Sorry for bringing up this topic from a few months ago, i'm new here and was reading through the threads and really liked this one. Moderator, please do as you wish if you feel this topic has died and should not be brought up.

Blocking, in my view, should go hand in hand with footwork. I'm not a fan of remaining static while intercepting a blow. I'm not sayign this is what Mok was describing, just my view on it. We should also be blocking to the outside but i cases where we mis-judge and block to the inside of their attack, we need to combine a block/strike action.

Anyway, just an opinion from a novice.

With footwork you mean you always want to do stepping while blocking? I think that greatly reduces your speed...

I agree though that the whole body should be involved in the blocking process. In tie with another current thread on the forum: When the wind blows, the whole tree moves.

Not sure what you mean Asmo about footwork slowing you down in combination with blocking. Is it meant as being counter-productive or something that should not be done.

Ow, not trying to be disrespectful or anything Sorry if it came over like that, English ain't my native language. I just think that if you consider good blocking always need stepping/footwork you make it slower then is needed in a lot (most?) of cases.

Maybe it's because i'm a smaller person, that i wouldn't prefer to stand stationary to block an incoming strike. Too much chance to be overwhelmed. I much prefer to block/evade and counterting at the same time.

No, take lady looks in the mirror, stepping is not always necessary. When you have an opponent hit you with a fast arm technique you still have to realize he's hitting at you and reacting to that, then if you have to add stepping to that as well I think you're way too late. Not saying stepping is always bad, just saying that imho always stepping is bad.
