any suggestions on recovering from ruptured bicep?

Greetings to everyone!
Not sure if this is appropriate place to post but am hoping some of you out there can make some helpful suggestions I can pass along to my 74 yr old father who just ruptured his left bicep earlier this week. Though he never formally studied martial arts, he set me on the path at a very early age by passing down self defense techniques due to his time in US military (he was a Paratrooper).

He has a PaceMaker, suffered a minor stroke few weeks ago but was cleared by doctors to resume his normal everyday routine. Due to him being a 'free bleeder,' the bicep rupture has resulted in his arm being one big black and blue bruise from his collar bone all the way down to his wrist. I took him the last little bit of powerful jow I had left and am taking him more today of another batch that is not as effective. Not sure yet if he will require surgery and they checked on blood clots.

If anyone has any suggestions for speeding up the healing process and/or physical therapy, please contact me.

Thanks in advance! RTW

Sorry to hear that Water_Tigress... Do you have access to a reputable herbal Chinese Dr in the area? He/she may be able to help esp with their own jow, which may be more powerful than what you can make up in a few days, as well as apply some healing modalities specific to his bruising. Hope he feels better soon.

Hi Folks,

What was your father doing to rupture his bicep like that? From what you said, it sounds like he has some circulatory issues. Both the stroke and the subdermal bleeding of the injury involve the extravascular movement of blood, indicating that the integrity of his blood vessels need support.

I treated this kind of thing once with a woman who in an attempt to prevent two boats from colliding kicked out with her leg and injured the quadriceps femoris, getting a huge bruise that covered nearly her entire thigh.

I liberally applied Dit Da Jow and rubbed it in repeatedly using a grasping kneading type of motion, after which I applied some running cupping. When she came back the next week her condition was remarkably better, with the bruise size and severity having decreased by maybe 50%. She only had two treatments.

For these kinds of bruises it is advisable to apply Dit Da Jow and I think it's safe to massage the affected tissues outward toward the extremity. Not too much pressure though because you don't want to damage his tissues further. If you don't have a secret family recipe, the commercially available product "Dr. Shi's Exceptionally Effective Trauma Liniment" works great, or you could try Dr. Nalbandyan's new product "X-Jow".

I think it would be also be advisable for your father to take an internal formula, something with a lot of Huang Qi, like Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang. The Huang Qi will strengthen the blood vessels and facilitate the absorption of extravascular blood without interfering with any medications he might be taking. Please contact me off-list if you would be interested in ordering this or any other formula.

Hello Tigress
- First ¿the rupture is partial or total? ¿Is "proximal" (in the shoulder, the ball of the biceps is lower than usual) or "distal (in the elbow, the ball of the biceps is upper that usual). In total rupture, only surgery is solution, but is necessary to operate as soon as possible, because the tendon could retract and will not be possible to repair it. In partial rupture, don't rub the affected area (it could get worse) and go to a doctor or a physiotherapist. In my country, if you are older than a certain age, surgery on patients is not recommended, because there is too much risk and rehabilitation would be difficult. With time and luck, it could be recovered equilibrating with other muscles, but the shoulder will remain weaker than before.
- The black bruise is the blood of the rupture, goes down by gravity. If is in the collar bone, probably the rupture is "proximal" (biceps tendon in the shoulder). The bruise will disappear during the next days, use antigravitational postures several times a day (with the hand in the air, over the head) and use anticoagulant ointment(in my country, thrombocid)
-This is a professional advice. Go to a doctor, your father is a high-risk patient (stroke). This forum is not the best place to look for medical orientation.
