If i'm not mistaken...our friend "vaulander" is an example of someone that falls in the Positive aspect group. He seems to a geniune desire to better himself and so long as he never quits, great for him!

My take on this query is " Whatever get's you there man"

It's not really important what gets a person interested in Martial Arts. The MOST important thing is after they have found it, what kind of person do they become? Are they literally wiling to do Hard Work or not ?

I've gotten many students who all said they started in tournament style TKD...and were later happy and surprised by the depth of Trad. Kung fu.

Go figure..."whatever gets you there man ".

And about the negatives persons:
Those persons who are lazy Deuche bags and not willing to travel if they have to...or Not willing to save up some money and learn from a real teacher (not just off Youtube).
...They will always lurk in the shadows and i was hesitant to contribute for a long time. Now that i'm a little older...I don't care as much anymore. So i've personally started to open up more. But in general, Screw them! Those morons with no integrity will never prosper.

It's just the result of advances in communication technology, combined with changing cultural values that hold changing forms of respect for the "older and wiser". This technological change has affected more than just the structure of Chinese martial arts.

For the local student, there is no way to know whether his sifu is a fraud or not. To a non-martial artist, anything a "master" says can become reality. advancements in technology have proven a useful tool to compare and contrast knowledge and information. At the same time, the very BS "masters" out there that used to prey on the ignorant are also fighting in this information war.

The emotional content required for a martial art cannot be learned from a video. It comes from eating bitterness and self-discovery. More importantly martial arts require a human connection. Otherwise, it's like learning to read without anything to read from, or learning how to paint without every picking up a brush and paint.

The world is not one of equal individuals, and some of us will never receive the opportunities to learn from a great teacher. Seeking to provide every doey-eyed person with a qualified and respected sifu is simply not possible. We just need to do the best they can to educate their peers, and hope that kung-fu hopefuls do enough research to find out who is who and what is what. It isn't THAT difficult; when you train with some schmuck and then with a genuine sifu, the difference can be FELT.
