Well I was wondering about balance since watching a wingchung video I saw they practiced in boats and apparently those who are good fighters have excellent balance, just look at Fedor how he can recover balance when he gets hit in the face or head.
As for extremes on one finger stand I think this is more real:

part of the myth.
it's not as if they practiced on canoes. Opera boats were big enough to have a stage.
If the boat was rocking so much that they needed to maintain balance-they wouldn't be practicing, they would be busy controlling the boat, sails, "all hands on deck! batten down the hatches!", and such. It would mean they were in the midst of a storm, or hitting white water. They are on a river, not the ocean.

Haha, and here I had always thought Wing Chun developed on canoes, while Hung Kyun strictly came from flat-bottom skiffs...

:?

Ok, Hung Kyun Deui Chaak will mainly train your balance, as it's always going to test your stance and center through the bridge...

Necessarily, basic-level Deui Chaak is "cooperatively timed", which offers both its strength and limitation. To train one's balance for a fight, where somebody is trying to break your timing while simultaneously imposing their own as "inaccessable", it is necessary to have a correspondingly advanced development, additional to such basic-level skills...

:D

Best,

Michael

For some reason my reply didn't show up. Here is the youtube I was referring about balance in a boat, hope you can enjoy

Haha, there's good incentive for not falling in, as you'll probably need an antibiotic treatment afterward!

I worked in HK with someone who worked there for many yrs. When he first went over, he took some water from HK harbor back to the USA for testing... It was so toxic that they could not just "get rid of it". They had to treat it as hazardous waste and charged him extra to dispose of it. Not the stuff you want to shower with...

There are apparently around 40 beaches in Hong Kong which the Leisure and Culture Service Department consider suitable for tourists (there are more beaches... just not considered suitable for tourists). On a Grading level of 1-4, with 1 being good and safe waters to swim and 4 being very poor water quality, there are only 7 beaches on that list of 40 with grade 1 waters. Just to be safe... I wouldn't go near the water at all.
