Hi group,

I plan to film some sparring this weekend which I will post for you all to see.
I was originally going to post this in response to a thread where the topic at hand was "why does most hung gar sparring look like kickboxing", but I cant find that thread now.

Non-cooperative play more than sparring:

Yes, I decided to stop being such a nancy-boy and put the videos
back up.

This is sparring?

I don't mean that in any insulting way, but I don't feel that this type of training would prepare myself or my students for the realities of close quarters combat. Hung is made to go through people as I learned it.

That being said, I give you credit for posting video and its nice to see someone training CMA that works with another person as part of their training.

Well, I saw the videos before you took them down, and they appeared to be exactly what you said: non-cooperative playing. The trick is to keep going without so many stops, and without being afraid of one's own move! That is all I thought that it was lacking, but as you said, it turned out being more playing than sparring anyway.

Thanks for sharing; it was neat to watch.

yeah...

I put them back up.

Our next session I believe will be with mouth guards and MMA gloves and will be full contact, including sweeps and throws.

Brennanos,

Keep your vids up, honesty is always the best policy. You are the better man for it...

My advice, for outside range sparring, if you want to improve your performance, try narrowing things down a little bit, just so you can work range and timing on your entry footwork. Concentrate on consistency with as few techniques as possible...

Gloves, cups and mouthpieces are good, so long as you still maintain consistency and control. Ironpalm is right, to have a consistent, cooperative training partner is a great first step. Maintain good contact control so that he stays that way!

For long-range sparring, all you really need is your fists anyway. It does help if you can grab and pin, or grab and throw as well. Other hand-form skills can be trained more safely and effectively in other "sparring isolation" drill format...

As Xiaoban mentioned, working from an approach of continuity keeps you on top of your game. Later, when you have become more comfortable with movement, you will find the timing easier for the "one-shot kill" (representing any strike with controlled, terminal emphasis)...

Also, decide if you actually want to spend much time inside, and if so, decide what your objectives are when you do get in there (ie, continued striking, positional control, takedown, etc). If not, stay outside, watch the control, and do it moving!

...have fun then, and keep us posted!

:D

Best,

Michael

I hope this doesn't sound too negative, but..

I think you need a deeper understanding of the pros + cons of movements and their actual applications. I agree with Daifong when he says "Concentrate on consistency with as few techniques as possible..." Focus on more high percentage techniques. Trying low percentage stuff is not helping you develop any applicable skill here..

A lot of what you are doing here will never work outside of a "playing" environment, and is actually making it easier for the other person to hit you if they have any fighting ability at all.

I see quite a bit of "punching" and "pushing" from awkward angles and stances that are not conducive to generating power. This might appear to work when you are playing because you think you could have hit him... but in a real situation would most likely put you in a more dangerous situation.

I don't know what stage of training you are at.. but it's all part of the process of learning what is practical, what works for you, etc..

But, hey.. at least you're training and open to criticism which will only help to open your mind a bit to new ideas, etc.. :)
