sparring, brawl or lack of technique

All right, since the times I used to spar or practice one on one fight, I noticed that both in kumite or free fight people will always remain in move forward, step back position and as soon as they will throw a punch it will become a boxing fight or just purely a brawl like in a bar. 20 yrs. later I am finding the same today and few exceptions I see using any techniques including the ones used in all the hungkyun forms. Is there anything different out there or am I missing something. Thanks for yoiur input.

There is more out there, but one has to train correctly to be able to use technique. Part of the trick is to build up more trust in the technique than one has in the "brawling". Your body uses what it thinks will work. That can be a tricky process but its very doable.

why you talkin about what others do what do you do?

hk isnt really very complicated to apply, espcially in sparring. what takes a long time is developing the skills associated with it. if individuals dont understand how to apply their art then the fault lies with the teacher and his/her methods

also the individuals who practice gung fu often dont focus on fighting, they focus on self defense and dont know what to do when faced with an opponent with similar skill sets or any skills lol

imo most gung fu people are training to protect and health not training for fighting skill, maybe "gung fu skill" or karate skills etc but not real fighting.

what we do in our training is we train 2-3 drills over and over again then we spar with just the drills ,only ,you can use them in different combinations and orders as long its the same techniques...
recently one of my guys who started back in october 09 with no prior m.a. training sparred against a guy with 4 years of martial arts training (kind of a jack of all trades) and took him apart by just using the drills he learned...thing is the guy with 4 yrs didnt know the drills while my guy only knows those drills..he was so shocked about himself that he always apologised to the guy..in the training before he didnt land that many hits because his training partners know the drills too of course...
so training drills over and over again then spar with just the drills may help you a lot to learn how to fight with them....

just some input
