It might depend on from who you heard that if its true or not
I've seen several greetings. Aside of the common one there is also what I heard being referred to as the crane greeting if my memory serves me right, and it looks a lot similar like the one you refer above. I've seen Gordon Liu perform it on youtube vids before performing Fu Hok. Maybe that is the one with the three steps being referred to TT?

TT: can you please mention the source? if my memory serves me well, the only source i have seen that mentions 3 steps forward/3 steps back is Wing Lam sifu's book.

not sure, but it definately wasn't WL's book, as I had heard it years ago. One of my Sifu's Chao Hung also said this is true, but nobody does it anymore.
Where in his book does he mention this?
I also asked Franciso Rivera this, and he does three steps foward as well.
-correct me if I'm wrong, Frank.
I believe the three steps is connected with Heaven Earth and Man.
(or was that Earth, Wind, and Fire? Perhaps it was Groucho, Chico, and Harpo...)

i do not have the book here right here, so i cannot tell you, but i have also read it somewhere
anyway, the number 3 obviously plays significant role in Hung kyun as in Tin dei wui/Saam hap wui associated system.
