The beauty of Jow Ga is that it not only combined Hung Ga, Choy Ga, Buk Siu Lum, the obvious reason for calling it a different name of style was that the founder(s) took the time to interpret and express it's origin in a manner with continuity necessary for an effective blend. Like any style, the founders of Jow Ga had their own interpretation of techniques and their own preference. The same would reasonably apply to two schools of the same style. It's often said jow ga has the agile footwork of choy and the upper body movements of hung ga. the footwork of hung ga and the upper body of choy were incorporated as well.
With Choy ga, swift foot work is essential, along with the oblique stepping and the sweeping ability of choy ga leg techniques also referred to as "stepping of the the triangle horse" or dodging ability with the stepping. some people have described Jow Ga as having the power of the crouching tiger and swiftness & pattern of the Leopard.
one essence in or characteristic is jow ga's palm techniques, but for later....
lastly the essence of Jow Ga's "crouching tiger boxing and leopard's clever swift and ruthless patterns" actually evolved while Jow Lung was in the so-called Norther Shaolin temple.
