quite possibly hearkening back to an even older, purely short-hand Siu Lam system...and yes, I would concur that your reference to the Baatgwa Gwaan is right on point!

Thanks for your time Daifong. this last part you wrote is very significant and insightful. this is what i was referring to. Often kung fu styles may have same names or characters, but the interpretation, shape, and intention may be slightly different or just one of the 10,000 ways you can use it.
