Between the late Ching Dynasty and early modern China (approx. 1900-1930) Fung Kun Cheung from Hokshan was known as the “King of Lion” in Guandong. Most famous for “Hok San” style lion.

Around 1921 Army General Lee Fuk Lam held a banquet in Tai Tong. General Lee Fuk is also well known for hiring famous army instructors such as Lam Sai Wing, Wong Wing, Lau Chung, and JOW LUNG at different times.

Fun Kun Cheung was invited to General Lee Fuk’s banquet and sent his inner door disciple Kwan Kou to peform the Hok San lion dance. After Kwan’s magnificent performance, General Lee invited Kwan to stay and teach lion dance in his camp. Kwan taught his unique lion dance techniques to Ng Kay, So Kai, Tsang Choi, Chow Tong, Mak Chin Ching, Lam Fei Hung, and JOW BIU.

Excerpt from Chinese newspaper:
“after six months they were well trained, especially JOW BIU, who was the most skillful”. “With his lion throwing ball technique during examination, JOW BIU won first place”.

Many of the most famous Hok San style lion dancers from Hong Kong can trace their techniques back to Fung Kung Cheung since some of his students like JOW BIU and MAK CHIN CHING taught in Hong Kong. Mak Chin Ching’s original kung fu Sifu was JOW LUNG. Jow Lung had already passed away during the meeting of Fung Kun Cheung and his inner door disciple Kwan Kou.

Fung Kung Cheung was well known for his “drunk Cheng”, “rolling ball”, and “bridge Cheng”.

Thanks!

It seems most people now think of hok san like the modern wushu variant of southern lion's. I've been training some futsan lion with a lion dance group, and they were surprised by the traditional hoksan style. e

Walter first, "Jow Ga Yat Ga Yahn". The traditional jow ga lion dance is something we must past on from the da gu to the long tail lion that we must pass on.

You are absolutely right, that is indeed a very standard impression that is prevalent, especially among younger generations, and outside of China. Thank you Sifu Derek Johnson for these clarifications!

a unique characteristic on the jow ga are specially painted tiger stripes underneath the lion's chin. you may see similar lions but Jow Biu had the these specially marked tiger stripes put on the jow ga lion,so whenever we buy lions we have to maintain detailed pictures of the color coordination and the tiger stripes. there are few other subtle markings on the jow ga style lion
